Makoto Nanaya vs Leone (Blazblue vs Akame ga Kill)

(Br3ndan5)

(T0m)

Makoto Nanaya, the unfaltering Beastkin from Blazblue!

Leone, the lioness assassin from Akame Ga Kill!

In the face of an oppressive regime, rebellions can spring up from anywhere, whether it’s opposing leaders or the bottom rung of society. The poor and impoverished, seen by the upper class as scum and animals, can fight to right the wrongs they’ve been dealt, even if it means scratching and clawing their way to victory like an animal. And for these two sisterly brawlers, nothing’s as natural to them as embracing their inner animal!

Will Leone claim the lion’s share and see victory, or will Makoto’s squirreling around drive her nuts? Let’s find out which of these animalistic women will win a DEATH BATTLE!

Background

Makoto

The year was 2100. While attempting to create a machine to kill the godlike Master Unit: Amaterasu, scientists Relius Clover and Shuichiro Ayatsuki unintentionally summoned a monster from the otherworldly dimension known as the Boundary. This monster, dubbed the Black Beast, ravaged Japan, and as it roamed the world, humanity was nearly destroyed. But humanity wasn’t completely defenseless against the poison-spewing kaiju.

By combining the use of science and magic, the sorceress Konoe Mercury was able to give humanity the art of Ars Magus as a way to stop the Beast. Alongside this discovery, mankind would begin developing other weapons to combat the Black Beast. To properly combat the poisonous seithr that radiated from its body, genetically engineered weapons were created such as the Kakas, an all female race of catgirls, and the Demi-Humans (or “beastmen”/“beastkin” in the dub), a race of humans with animal features.

But when the Dark War against the Black Beast was over, both of these species were rendered obsolete. Having served their purpose, the remaining Kakas formed a tribe and migrated into the mountaintops, while the Demi-Humans/Beastkin were forced to integrate with humanity to middling success. Because of their animalistic features and how they were only bred for war, Beastkin became the subject of racism and discrimination from regular humans, often viewed as second class citizens by the public.

Born in the mountainous Hierarchical City of Shinatsu, Makoto Nanaya had to face this prejudice firsthand, and the constant abuse she suffered caused her to despise humanity. Even when she entered the prestigious Military Academy to aid her poverty-stricken family, Makoto was often anti-social and snippy toward others, but that would change upon meeting Tsubaki Yayoi and Noel Vermillion. Despite being from high-ranking noble families, they treated her as equal, with Tsubaki defending her from bullies and Noel’s innocent nature leaving her clueless as to why she’d see Makoto as any different from her. This would eventually lead to them forming a deep friendship and help Makoto come out of her shell, becoming more optimistic and bubbly.

All three would soon graduate from the academy and become members of the world-controlling government of the Novus Orbis Librarium. Makoto would become second lieutenant of the Intelligence Department, but during her service she’d come to realize the NOL was secretly corrupt and switch sides, becoming a double agent for the rival agency Sector Seven.

Now working under the scientist Kokonoe Mercury and her cyborg assistant Iron Tager, Makoto’s ability to gather and relay information proved instrumental in getting Noel and Tsubaki to defect from the NOL. With her friends by her side, she was able to play a role in the much larger plans of preventing the NOL’s higher-ups from destroying Amaterasu and dethroning the NOL’s shadow leader to install its proper successor: Homura Amanohokosaka, the son of its previous empress Tenjo.

Unfortunately, their plan still had a few snags. The NOL’s ex-leader was revealed to be the goddess of death Hades Izanami, and her plan to destroy the world was still at the risk of being fulfilled. Having sacrificed most of humanity with a planet-wide ritual, Izanami tricked Noel into activating a black sphere called the Embryo, which absorbed the few survivors into a pocket dimension that rewrote all of their memories. When their true memories were finally restored, Makoto found herself alongside the rest of the “chosen,” forced to engage in a free-for-all. The prize? Being given the all powerful reality-warping Azure Flame Grimoire to remake the world in her image. And all she had to do to obtain it was kill Noel!

Naturally, Makoto refused to kill her best friend, or anyone else for that matter. As she traveled through the Embryo, she helped another survivor, Naoto Kurogane, navigate through while searching for Noel. These travels were eventually intercepted by Es, the guardian of the all-powerful Azure. After being interrogated on why she wasn’t searching for it, Makoto confirmed that she wanted to protect the people she loved with her own power, not something she didn't understand. Es accepted this answer, and Makoto was subsequently stripped of her status, causing her body to dissolve into seithr like the rest of humanity before her.

Fortunately, this wasn’t the end for Makoto. Ragna the Bloodedge, the arch enemy of the NOL, was ultimately the one to claim the Azure Flame Grimoire, and to ensure everyone got their wishes granted, he completely remade the world. Now Makoto could work alongside Tsubaki as part of the NOL while visiting Noel and her “sister” Lambda whenever they wished.

Leone

In the world of Akame Ga Kill, the world is ruled under one power: the tyrannical, corrupt Empire. With a Capital measuring at 20,000 km, the Empire is overseen by a naive child known only as the Emperor and his advisor, Prime Minister Honest, aided by a battalion of loyal soldiers and subordinates that embody the worst humanity has to offer. From sadistic darwinists who see everyone below them as unworthy of life, justice-obsessed cyborgs who would murder anyone for so much as thinking against the Empire’s rule, or the numerous corrupt men and women who use their power to torture or trample on the poor and downtrodden.

Naturally, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to rebel against this hellhole of a kingdom, with this coalition forming under the name of the Revolutionary Army. One of this faction’s major players, the former general Najenda, would eventually form her own sub-faction: a group of assassins called Night Raid. This group was occupied by former Empire loyalists, those stricken by poverty, and several assassins who’d grown disgusted after seeing how the Empire ruled. And one of its older members was a woman whose name befits her nickname “the Lioness”: Leone.

Having grown up in the Capital’s slums, Leone’s life was extremely difficult, and she had to resort to stealing, conning, and gambling to stay alive. But despite being a dirty thief, even she couldn’t stand by and let the Empire continue its rule after witnessing a high-ranking aristocrat who got his kicks by trampling children to death under his horses.

After killing this man in cold blood, she got a taste for assassination, and she was soon scouted by the Revolutionary Army into becoming part of Night Raid. Acting as either an assassin for hire to kill the wealthy or take out targets related to the Empire under Najenda’s orders, delivering the just punishment as she let out her rage on all of them. But despite the brutal nature of her occupation and knowing that she was no hero by any means, it never really kept her carefree attitude out for long around the people she scammed or other rebels who quickly became valuable friends such as Akame, Mine, Bulat, and even Tatsumi, a country bumpkin she swindled out of his money and recently scouted into Night Raid after his travel companions were tortured to death. The two became close companions after a few missions and Leone grew to have a bit of a crush on Tatsumi.

As Night Raid killed target after target and the Revolutionary Army kept advancing partly thanks to their efforts, the Empire formed their own special group to combat them: the Jaegers, under the command of crazy sadist General Esdeath. Both groups soon became involved in a series of battles with each other that became bloodier and bloodier than the last. Night Raid became emptier and emptier with the sacrifice of members like Sheele, Bulat, Chelsea, or Lubbock, with Leone remaining as the supporting big sister of the group when things got rough. Especially to Tatsumi, who was suffering under the risk of Incursio taking over his body. Nevertheless, he kept pushing with the support of Akame and Leone.

All of this eventually ended up in Tatsumi being captured by the Empire for his eventual execution at the hands of Budo and Esdeath to lure Night Raid into the open. But not wanting to simply just leave another crew member for dead, Mine attempted to rescue her boyfriend by herself despite knowing the danger meant, but was stopped by Leone and the rest of Night Raid as they convinced her that this battle could only be won through rationale and the combined teamwork brought by their friendship. All of them worked together to save Tatsumi and even managed to take out Budo, the highest ranking member of the Empire.

Now with the capital of the Empire left defenseless, the Revolutionary Army made its final push to freedom along with Akame and Tatsumi as they battled Esdeath and the ice cavalry she built as its last defense. During this, Leone snuck into the Imperial Castle and battled Honest to avenge all those who had suffered by the Empire’s hands. One that was promptly ended by Honest breaking her Teigu and shooting her many times across the stomach, remaining at the verge of death as she lost her only means of recovery. But with her perseverance to live she fused with the remaining pieces of Lionelle and earned herself just a bit of time to literally rip out and rearrange Honest’s guts. Prompting her to drop Honest off a ledge just so he could be endlessly tortured by the Revolutionary Army.

With Honest and Esdeath finally defeated, the world soon ushered in a new era of peace. The Capital and the rest of society had been rebuilt into a place where everyone stood as equals and would no longer suffer oppression by those at the top of the ladder. After this, Leone refused Akame’s offer to receive treatment from her injuries as it was far too late, only managing to briefly cheat death thanks to her fusion with the Teigu. Some may simply call this the pride of a lioness, others may call it stupidity, but Leone wanted to choose when and where to die, and in her last moments she bid farewell to Akame and enjoyed one last night with everyone she had known at a bar. The lioness soon left and ended up in the same place she first met Tatsumi, reminiscing on the old times with a smile as she eventually succumbed to her wounds.

Experience, Intelligence, and Skill

Makoto

After graduating from the NOL’s military academy, Makoto has acted as an information gatherer and spy for the NOL’s Intelligence Department and Sector Seven, often feeding information about the former’s plans to the latter. She even covertly researched her superior, Hazama, and found he didn’t have any records.

Her talents don’t end at espionage. Despite only having an average Ars Magus aptitude, Makoto’s physical prowess is said to be off the charts, letting her take on a group of two or three people with no problem, and her body has been trained to a level no man can match.

She’s shown off this physical ability by carrying Tsubaki on her back while running, and has regularly fought the giant cyborg Iron Tager with no issue. While not as regularly, she’s also battled Tsubaki, a skilled assassin, and has consistently defeated her.

Leone

Ever since she joined the assassination group Night Raid, Leone has proven time and time again to be one of its most capable members. Despite having seemingly little no training, her straightforward fighting has let her fight from anything from armies of imperial goons, skilled martial artists from the temple of Koukenji and even friggin Dinosaur Danger beasts.

She’s willing to enter fights even with only one arm, and if an opponent outmatches her, she has no problem playing dead, something that’s standard practice for Night Raid.

Aside from fighting, Leone’s also shown to be fairly intelligent. Even before becoming part of Night Raid, she was a regular con artist capable of robbing others blind, something she’s done to numerous people. She was able to gather information on Esdeath’s plan to create a team of Teigu wielders.

After Dorothea summoned a monster that nearly killed her, Leone decided to forgo fighting the monster and instead took out Dorothea by snapping her neck. Then, just to be sure she was dead, she crushed Dorothea under a giant slab of rock.

Equipment

Makoto

Tonfas

A pair of cross-shaped tonfas tied to Makoto’s wrists.

Acorn

As one of her taunts, Makoto can throw out an acorn to hit an opponent and punish attacks. While it doesn’t do much damage, it can somehow break through Distortion Drives.

Leone

The King Of Beasts Transformation: Lionelle

One of the Teigu, a series of 48 weapons forged by the best metalsmiths 1000 years ago using Danger Beast remains and rare metals. And this rare, legendary weapon… was something Leone bought on the black market for dirt cheap. Unimpressive backstory aside, this belt-shaped Teigu transforms Leone into a more bestial form that enhances all five of her senses and gives her cat ears and claws along with superhuman strength. She also gains animalistic instincts that can warn her if her prey is too dangerous, the ability to mark others as hers, and a quick healing factor.

Forms

Makoto

Galaxian Impact

All of Blazblue’s cast can activate a power-up called Overdrive, which surrounds them in an aura of blue flames and enhances their fighting style for the next five to fifteen seconds depending on damage taken. For Makoto, her energy-based attacks are bumped up to max power and her special attacks can bounce the opponent off the ground or wall.

Leone

Fused State

After having her Teigu shattered, being shot in the stomach three times, and thrown off a castle onto her head, Leone briefly merged with Lionelle’s shards to enter a more animalistic form. This greatly enhances her strength, speed, and healing factor, but there’s a slight catch. Any wounds sustained beforehand will heal when it activates, but they’ll eventually reopen given enough time.

Skills

Makoto

Close-Quarters Combat

As you’d expect from someone whose moveset is almost entirely reliant on punches, Makoto is highly skilled in CQC. She can use haymakers with Cosmic Ray, hooks and uppercuts with Infinite Rush, knock the opponent off their feet with the Star Gazer sweeping punch, send them flying with a counter punch to the gut called Shooting Star, or Space Counter where she parries an attack and punishes it with a straight punch that leaves them spinning.

Leone

Close-Quarters Combat

Fitting her straightforward nature as the Lioness, Leone specializes in the secret art of beating the crap out of everything with punches and kicks as her way to clean up the trash of the world. She combines this skill with the beastlike physicality from her Lionelle to make up for quite a deadly style. Being able to deliver hammer blows that pierce right through a guy’s torso, wicked fast punches, or take her opponents for quite the twist as she goes for the neckbreaker.

Agility

Leone is often shown traversing areas by jumping long and wide distances, using this to avoid attacks, push herself off walls or bounce across rooftops while carrying Tatsumi.

Stealth

As one would expect from an assassin, Leone is quite adept when it comes to sticking to the shadows while dispatching others. She’s used this on several occasions to kill her targets or scout them out.

Powers

Makoto

Beastkin Physiology

As a Beastkin, Makoto possesses far superior physical abilities and natural healing to humans, enhanced senses that can detect the scent of blood on others, a lifespan far beyond the average human, and a prehensile tail that can cushion falls or act as an extra limb during combos.

Enhanced Senses

Makoto’s senses are closer to an animal’s than a human’s, and she possesses a keen sense of smell. Her perception of time is slower than the average person’s, giving her enough time to dodge a slap and move someone out of the way of that same slap. She also possesses instincts that can warn her about people attacking her blind spot.

Energy Manipulation

Attacks like Impact, Cosmic Ray, Lander Blow, and Sirius Jolt have Makoto enhance her punches with blue energy, and they can reach up to 3 levels. Sirius Jolt completely bypasses an enemy’s defense and causes them to bounce off wherever they land.

She can create an energy ball called the Comet Cannon to act as a shield or attack from a distance. Her Distortion Drives and Exceed Accel take this power a step further by creating massive fist constructs.

Afterimages

With Asteroid Vision, Makoto can create two illusionary clones as she rushes toward the opponent. Both clones will disappear when one of them is struck, leaving the real Makoto to surprise them with a counter attack and potentially start a combo.

Ars Magus

Despite only having an average aptitude for it, Makoto is still capable of wielding Ars Magus, a fusion of magic and science used for numerous purposes in everyday life. Makoto’s been shown using a defensive Ars to protect herself from dense seithr.

Power of Order (debatable)

Following her fight with Relius, Makoto drew on the thoughts of her friends to overcome her fear of him, and Relius believed this could be a sign she has the Power of Order. See the verdict for whether or not this is usable.

Leone

Enhanced Senses

While using Lionelle, all five of Leone’s senses are enhanced. Leone can use them to locate potential enemies or allies by scent, smell diseases on someone, hear events occurring from far away, see other beings from far distances, and locate hidden enemies or anyone else in her surroundings via hearing and smell.

Extrasensory Perception

Thanks to the enhanced senses given to her by Lionelle, Leone can sense the dangerous intent or “vibe” of others from far away.

Accelerated Development

During her brief fight with Rokugou, she went from the whip blitzing her even with her enhanced senses to grabbing it mid-swing the next time he tried to hit her.

Regeneration

Each Teigu possesses a trump card, allowing them to develop new abilities when their users are pushed to their limits. And for Leone, Lionelle’s trump card is regeneration. She can quickly heal from having a knife thrown into her head, being hit by explosions and sent through a wall, getting stabbed from behind, and a barrage of punches from Honest. It even kept her alive through Esdeath stabbing her eye and tail, opening an air hole in her cheek, tearing off her fingernails and toes, and cutting off her right breast, arm, and left leg, though it should be noted that healing from this took months. And while she can’t heal severed arms without outside help or regenerate lost blood, she can force the bleeding to stop and regain her strength by eating herbivores.

Her Fused form regenerated after being shot three times in the stomach, thrown off the top floor of a castle, and hitting the pavement, though she was only able to move afterward because of that fusion and eventually died when it wore off.

Resistances

Makoto

Seithr: As a beastkin, Makoto is said to be more resilient to seithr than humans and possesses a high resistance to its effects, degrading at a 0.2% rate compared to normal.

Seithr is poisonous enough to contaminate water and soil to the point others can’t live off them, cause physical and mental deterioration, and will interfere with communication systems if it’s dense enough.

Leone

Poisons: Dr. Stylish had to use a super powerful paralyzing drug on Akame, Lubbock, Mine, and Leone because he doubted the average poison would affect them, and they were still able to slowly overcome this drug seconds later.

Scaling

Makoto

Team Remix Heart

Makoto has multiple statements and showings of being comparable to the rest of her teammates, having fought alongside, against, or defeated all of them at one point or another.

Noel Vermillion

Tsubaki Yayoi

Mai Natsume

Sector Seven

Makoto has fought several of her coworkers at Sector Seven multiple times, regularly holding her own against Tager, fighting evenly against Bullet in her Centralfiction arcade mode, and briefly doing the same to Kokonoe. Bullet’s win quote against Makoto even has her admit she’s no match for Beastkin when it comes to physical aptitude.

High tier characters

See “Before the Verdict” for an explanation on this and some of the feats

Ragna

Take-Mikazuchi

The rest of the cast

Leone

Night Raid

Among her fellow assassin friends, Leone has proven herself to be a capable asset to Night Raid, having fought alongside them against enemies they were similarly comparable with or defeated enemies that have given trouble to them before. Like when she defeated a Dinosaur Danger Beast with a single attack, with Tatsumi in the first stage of Incursio stating that said Danger Beast would deal heavy damage if he wasn’t careful. She’s also survived blasts from other Teigu like Mine’s Pumpkin, at least at a casual firing.

As a group

Akame

Tatsumi

Mine

Susanoo

Jaegers

Under Esdeath’s command the Jaegers have frequently taken on the rebels of Night Raid plenty of times, including Leone herself. She’s broken through the Teigu of Bols with her teeth and even taken on other members of Jaegers like Kurome or Run (in the anime).

Esdeath

Weaknesses

Makoto

Makoto can be somewhat scatterbrained at times, and her hot-blooded nature often leads to her rushing into battle without any plans.

She’s primarily a close quarters fighter that heavily relies on speed and instincts over strategy and defenses. While she does have a few ranged options, they’re limited to Comet Cannon and some Distortion Drives, meaning she’ll often struggle against projectile-heavy fighters and more mobile characters.

Leone

Leone’s strictly a close-quarters fighter with no ranged options to speak of. While her regen can potentially make up for this and give her enough time to get in close, it’s not infallible and does have limits. As previously mentioned, she can’t regrow limbs or recover from excess blood loss without help from a third party, whether that’s her teammates or the surrounding herbivores, respectively. And despite building up a tolerance for poisons, she can still be taken out of commission if one’s potent enough.

But her biggest weakness is her lack of self-preservation. She actively refused treatment for three bullet wounds in her stomach despite having more than enough time to remove them. And big surprise, this led to her bleeding to death in the middle of the street!

Before The Verdict

Makoto

Makoto’s Astral Heat and possible scaling to the high tiers

Befitting her ultimate move, Makoto’s Planet Crusher is not only her biggest feat, it’s also one of the most destructive feats in all of Blazblue, clocking in at 10 yottatons (low-end) or 1 ronnaton (high-end). With this kind of power behind her, it would easily net Makoto the win even if you gave Leone the highest possible scaling in Akame Ga Kill. But whether or not it’s usable is another matter entirely.

On paper, this Astral Heat doesn’t seem to have much of a problem. Plenty of other Astrals have the same flair and spectacle, like Tager’s, Bang’s, Azrael’s, or Kokonoe’s. However, what sets Makoto’s apart is its presentation. Her Planet Crusher is more of a gag feat, and nothing in the series backs up her having this level of power. In fact, there are multiple statements and fights that showcase this.

She’s left exhausted from fighting Hazama in Continuum Shift while Hazama’s no worse for wear. He does call her impressive, but Makoto later admits Hazama would’ve killed her if Jin hadn’t saved her. When they encounter each other again, Makoto’s completely frozen in fear and needs Rachel to bail her out. The last fight in the story could lend some credence to her scaling higher since one of the options you can pick is an illusory copy of Noel with all her battle abilities, but the next two games muddy this feat by a bit. And if we use her bad ending, her own narration says her punches aren’t doing anything to Relius.

During Chronophantasma, when Tager and Litchi are ambushed by Azrael and Nu-13, Kagura suggests sending in Makoto for backup and Kokonoe immediately shoots it down, stating she wouldn’t stand a chance.

Centralfiction has an alternate, bloodlusted Makoto go up against Mu-12 and get all of her attacks blocked before being one-shot by a reluctant Mu. The real Makoto later fights Ragna in his base form, and he casually beats her. It doesn’t help that right after their fight, she admits she didn’t stand a chance against him.

You could try and argue her arcade modes would let her scale to the high tiers, but Blazblue’s arcade modes are highly inconsistent with the internal scaling shown in the story. And this inconsistency is especially bad in Makoto’s case!

Continuum Shift’s arcade has her exhausted from fighting Tager and Unlimited Hazama, whose comments after the fight amount to a backhanded compliment. In Chronophantasma she beats Tager, but it’s later revealed he was holding back against her. Near the end of it Makoto goes on to defeat Tsubaki and (though she’s exhausted from doing so) fends off her Izayoi form despite Tsubaki going in with intent to kill.

Her 3 Centralfiction arcade modes don’t change anything in this regard. While Makoto fights Kokonoe in act 3, it’s clear from the aftermath that Kokonoe’s not taking the fight seriously and actively holding back. Makoto’s fights against Hazama and Relius end with her getting thoroughly beaten, which is only made worse by Relius being extremely casual when they fought. Even trying to scale her to fighting Nine and Izanami at the end of acts 1 and 2 isn’t supported by the game’s context. The fight with Nine is her sparring with Makoto, and despite Makoto fighting seriously against Izanami and seemingly defeating her, this was also just a spar so Makoto could gain her piece of the Azure. She’s not fighting Izanami in the context of a serious fight.

Using a casual spar to scale Makoto to Izanami is completely nonsensical, especially when Makoto’s own arcade mode has her lose to Relius while he’s holding back, the same guy who decimated Izanami in a serious fight during his arcade mode. And if we go off other arcades, Makoto loses to Ragna, Izanami, and Mu-12, with Ragna implying she isn’t even a challenge (the Japanese version has her admit she’s no match and he says it’s because she’s easy to read) and the fight with Mu explicitly being a serious fight. She does get back up and says she can still fight after losing in Izanami’s arcade… but they just end up standing there and talking before Izanami leaves. So we can’t verify if her claims are legit or if she’s just being stubborn.

Even putting aside the inconsistencies in arcade modes, scaling Makoto to Izanami completely breaks the story mode. As we already explained, Makoto in both modes lost to a casual Ragna, who at best could only stalemate Izanami while not holding back. That’s not even getting into the ridiculous gap between the high end of the moon punch versus a feat Izanami says she’d struggle with!

TL;DR

Makoto’s moon destroying punch is a gag feat that’s unsupported by the narrative or her own scaling. Even if you try to justify it with her arcade modes, some of those showings heavily contradict the main story mode and others have her lose to characters well below the top tiers or anyone that could back up her Astral’s lower end yield.

Blazblue’s lightning feats

Of the few onscreen feats seen in Blazblue, there are two that stand out as visually impressive, and they both happen to involve Ragna and Hazama dodging Rachel’s lightning.

However, upon rereading and rewatching these scenes, both have problems. Starting with Ragna’s, a recalc not only got lower results (being Mach 140 at best vs the 5868 from before), but a lengthy comment debunking its legitimacy. If you don’t want to click the link or can’t see the comment, here’s what it says:

There's no feat here, at least not with these scans. Ignoring if this qualifies for lightning speed or not.

We aren't shown Ragna dodging the attack in comparison to it. All we see is the end result. For all we know, Ragna jumped out of the way before that attack hit the ground. Or maybe he's just running/jumping and the attack struck where he used to be. He wasn't standing still and jumped away, he is already moving before we see the lightning. That also means your 3 meter distance is wrong here, since that only applies to Ragna before he started running. Also, as you can see in the scan, that bolt didn't come down in a straight line. This would increase the distance as well.

Due to the nature of this being a manga, there's no way to say when Ragna began moving in comparison to this attack.

As for Hazama’s version, while this one has the benefit of actual footage to show him dodging, if we go frame by frame, we can see that him “dodging” the lightning is anything but. The first bolt already strikes before Hazama’s sprite is animated dodging it, he jumps away before the second bolt is animated on screen, and the same happens with the third. Not to mention that these bolts are animated traveling in one frame, and as we already explained in a previous blog, there needs to be multiple frames to prove that someone or something is moving in tandem with a person or object. Since the lightning travels within a single frame, there’s no way to prove in tandem movement.

Ragna’s nanosecond statement

If you’ve read our previous Blazblue blogs, you’d be familiar with a statement we’ve talked about before. In the final episode of Alter Memory, Terumi says Ragna defeated Mu-12 in a few nanoseconds, which gave him enough time to infiltrate Takamagahara. This was the highest feat in those blogs, calculated to be in the low FTL range, so why are we bringing it up?

Like with the lightning feats, upon reviewing the context, there are problems with it. Or to be more accurate, the multiple versions of it.

But before getting into that, let’s start with the use of the word “nanosecond.” “Nanosecond” can mean one of two things: one billionth of a second, or an informal way of describing a very brief moment. The calculation for this statement assumes Terumi is using the first definition, but no matter what version you look at, all of them point more toward the second.

Starting with the games, while not present in the dub, the Japanese version of Continuum Shift has Terumi state “全ての可能性でここだけ、この一瞬、ラグナ君がクサナギを倒したほんの数ナノ秒・・・テメエ等は「よそ見を」した。” Translated, this means “Of all the possibilities, only here, in this moment, in the few nanoseconds that Ragna defeated Kusanagi... you guys ‘looked away’.” However, the very next line has one of the AIs state “Correct. For 1/480000th of a second, the system was engaged solely in observing the phenomenon in question.”

While Alter Memory doesn’t have any verbal contradiction, it’s instead contradicted by the series’ own footage. From what we see in the episode, Takamagahara watching the fight and Terumi’s infiltration started way before Ragna defeated Mu-12. Takamagahara is shown watching when Mu throws a giant sword at Ragna, and Terumi appears near the end of both cuts at 6:44 and 9:09. Even if we assume they only started watching at the first timestamp and stopped watching after the second cut (which is unlikely given they comment on Ragna defeating Mu, which happens afterward), that’s still over 2 minutes where they were distracted by Ragna, more than long enough for Terumi to sneak into Takamagahara.

Not even the statement from the Continuum Shift novel is free from contradictions, and that has the Takamagahara infiltration happen off screen! Terumi’s explanation there is "You see, Takamagahara... they looked away for a little bit. The owner of the Azure Grimoire and the successor of the Azure Grimoire fighting. The climax of a special match! When you guys were at your most excited, they watched for just one second- no, a moment, a few nanoseconds. That was the gap I needed to enter the system."

So regardless of what version or translation of the nanosecond statement we use, each one has a timeframe that contradicts the FTL calc’s assumption, whether it’s the next line, the footage on screen, or even the very same line!

Even if we accept the FTL calc as legit, assume Terumi was using the “billionth of a second” definition, and completely ignore the contradictions, there’s still the problem that we don’t have a shown or stated distance for how far Terumi had to move to infiltrate Takamagahara. All we know from this conversation with Relius is that Takamagahara’s somewhere in the Boundary, but that doesn’t tell us how far it is from the altar where Hazama “died.”

FTL Izayoi arguments

Some powerscalers have tried to argue Blazblue’s cast can react to lightspeed attacks because of Kokonoe stating that Izayoi steals light by drawing in a wavelength of electromagnetic radiation and comparing it to a black hole. The main arguments used to scale the cast to this are Izayoi amping Tsubaki during her charging attacks, using these statements to claim that Izayoi boosts the user’s speed, or saying the cast should scale because Izayoi absorbs light and the cast can dodge its attacks. However, each of these arguments have problems.

Izayoi’s light absorption and constructs

The most glaring problem with Izayoi’s light absorption is it’s a passive effect, and the cast only dodges attacks from it after the light’s been turned into a solid construct that doesn’t display any properties of light. In fact, we see multiple examples of Izayoi’s constructs showing force in both the games and novels.

Chronophantasma has Jin dodge Izayoi’s spear in its full power mode, which explodes when it hits the background. The second Continuum Shift novel has Tsubaki blow Noel back with a wing of light, there’s a statement that its light could send Jin into a wall, and we later see it create wing constructs that shoot out and shatter the floor beneath Jin. In other words, all of Izayoi’s constructs contradict two of the main properties of light, i.e light doesn’t have force or explode on contact.

To be fair, Tsubaki does have one move where she stabs the opponent and fires off a barrage of light beams, but it’s impossible to block or react to these beams in-game. If the blade gets blocked or it somehow misses, the move is canceled, so you can’t even argue they’d have relativistic or lightspeed reactions from a gameplay perspective. There’s also the problem that these beams visibly change direction mid-flight of their own accord, which contradicts another of light’s properties: moving in a straight line.

Kokonoe and Library statements

In regards to the stat-boosting statements, the Library entry only mentions that it raises the user’s power by several times and says nothing about speed. However, Kokonoe’s statement does say Izayoi boosts the user’s physical abilities, with the Japanese version even using the kanji “全ての 能力を数倍に引き上げる,” which translates to “increase all abilities several times.” While this does lend credence to Izayoi giving its user a speed boost, there’s nothing to back up that those boosts make her FTL. All it says is Tsubaki can increase her speed by several times, but going off the definition of “several,” that increase would only be “more than one” or “more than two, but fewer than many.”

Tsubaki’s charge attacks

These only amount to a momentary burst, and coating herself in light doesn’t automatically give her lightspeed combat speeds.

There’s even a part in the first Continuum Shift novel that completely debunks this argument. Tsubaki charges at Jin, and in the time it takes her to rush toward him, a little girl is able to drop her ball and run toward it, then Jin lunges at that girl, grabs her, and pushes her out of the way. And according to the narration, Tsubaki isn’t fast enough to react to the girl or move her sword out of the way. Instead Jin has to rush in and take a hit that wasn’t even intended to be fatal!

Infinite speed Makoto?

During her Continuum Shift story mode, Makoto at one point finds herself incapacitated while investigating a deactivated cauldron. When it activates, Makoto falls unconscious from the intense seithr and gets sent to a parallel timeline, with Rachel later explaining that she was dragged into the Boundary and sent into another timeline/possibility. After fighting an illusory copy of one of her friends, Makoto is sent back to her original world. Since the Boundary is described as being an “infinite expanse and ”contains infinite amounts of information” and Makoto crossed through it twice, that would give her infinite speed, right?

No.

Both times she travels through it, we get a POV shot afterward where Makoto wakes up from unconsciousness at her destination. This means she wasn’t consciously moving or reacting to anything as she traveled. You could excuse this by saying that she was incapacitated seconds before her first trip, but you can’t do the same for her second trip. She's still fully conscious before entering the Boundary, nothing happens that would’ve knocked her out before she enters, yet she’s still knocked out upon exiting.

Okay, well maybe that’s something that happened to her, but what about the other cast members? In a similar vein we see that characters who’ve fallen through the Boundary and exited to other locations like Ragna, Jin, Relius, and Naoto are unconscious whenever they arrive at their destination. Even when Litchi was absorbed into Arakune and she did maintain consciousness there, her body is still shown waking up when she leaves.

You could try and argue against this since there are some examples or statements of characters remaining conscious in the Boundary or being able to move inside it. Jubei’s said to be able to cross it in his prime, Azrael’s stated by Hakumen to travel along the Boundary, Relius expresses the intent to enter it, and Litchi was fully conscious in the Boundary despite also being shown awakening from unconsciousness when she returned. Even the novels have Hakumen being able to move his body in the Edge of the Boundary and cut through the fabric of space to escape it, with the latter being described as something he could easily do.

However, these examples all have problems.

Litchi and Hakumen didn’t travel anywhere when they were in the Boundary. All Litchi did was float motionlessly and all Hakumen does in the novel is move his arms. And for all of the statements of characters traveling inside the Boundary, there is zero proof they’re traveling its entire distance to reach their destination. The closest we get is a glossary entry saying prime field devices were made to investigate the Boundary’s deepest reaches, which still has the problems of not being an actual feat. It’s just a statement about their purpose, and even taking it at face value, we don’t have a timeframe for it and there’s no actual proof in-game that they can travel across the entire Boundary.

Even some of the clips people have argued in favor of infinite speed are blatantly wrong, like saying Ragna, Rachel, Valkenhayn, Jin, and Trinity moved in the Boundary near the end of the game. Which is a ridiculous claim when the start of this same video blatantly states the white space they’re in isn’t the Boundary and the previous chapter says it’s what remained of the previous world after it was erased.

What happened to the Tager calc?

If you’ve read our previous Blazblue blogs, you may have noticed that the Tager calc is far lower than in those blogs. While it was previously as high as 899 kilotons as 1% the speed of light, after reevaluating the feat, the highest possible output is only 10.489 kilotons and Mach 1028.708 at highest. What happened to downgrade it that much?

The problem is the distance. The calc used in our previous blogs assumes that Tager is flying into outer space at a distance of 10,000,000 meters, or 10,000 kilometers. A previous calc of the same feat justified this by saying there are visible stars and space debris in the background, but this is all contradicted by a later entry.

Blazblue Alternative: Dark War’s version has a display showing Tager exceeding a height of 999,999. Assuming this is referring to meters, accounting for the fact that he reaches beyond that distance, the 2 second timeframe where he continues ascending, and using the heaviest character in that game (Hakumen), the results would become 2.572 - 3.732 kilotons and Mach 509.362 - 613.615. And if we assume the distance in ADW is meant to reflect the mainline games, this would buff Tager’s Astral to 5.929 - 10.489 kilotons and Mach 773.426 - 1028.708.

To give you an idea of how big of a downgrade this is, even the highest results would be nearly 86 times weaker and 9.26 times slower!

Take-Mikazuchi scaling

Like with the Tager feat, our previous Blazblue blogs have had the characters scale to feats performed by Take-Mikazuchi, such as destroying the Hierarchical Cities of Ibukido and Kagutsuchi with its blasts.

While Ragna’s fight with Take-Mikazuchi gave the idea of scaling to it at the time, revisiting Blazblue and discovering some previously untranslated material has kneecapped the idea of scaling to Take-Mikazuchi. The in-game glossary states “The laser it fires is powerful enough to annihilate an entire Hierarchical City, but it requires several years to recharge between shots,” and adaptations like the manga and the second Calamity Trigger novel state that it will take four years for Take-Mikazuchi to conserve the energy to destroy a Hierarchical City. While not as direct, the Calamity Trigger game and Alter Memory have similar statements.

By the time Ragna, Jin, and Noel fight Take-Mikazuchi, only one month has passed, and their fights were after Take-Mikazuchi was heavily nerfed. Jin and Noel fought it after it was weakened by Celica's presence, and Ragna’s fight happened after Kushinada’s Lynchpin shut off all seithr on the planet, effectively cutting off its main power source. This means we’d only be able to apply massive downscaling to its blasts.

For a highball, let’s use the stated timeframe of 4 years and apply them to the output for Chimelical Complex chapter 3’s destruction of Kagutsuchi, the destruction of Ibukido from Calamity Trigger and Calamity Trigger Reconstruction, Ibukido’s crater in Variable Heart, and Chimelical Complex chapter 9’s version of the Kagutsuchi blast. There are 48 months in 4 years, so Ragna, Jin, and Noel would only scale to 1/48 of Take-Mikazuchi’s blasts. With the above calcs in mind, this would leave them with 4.69 gigatons (Chilemical Complex 3), 30.83 gigatons (Ibukido in Calamity Trigger), 80.17 megatons (Ibukido in Calamity Trigger Reconstruction), 99.406 megatons (Ibukido’s crater), and 689.89 gigatons (Chilemical Complex 9). And this is ignoring that Take-Mikazuchi was weakened before they fought it, so the output might be lower.

Alright, so the AP has taken a nosedive, but what about the speed? Outside of one specific version of events, it’s the same deal.

On the surface, you might think there’d be potential speed buffs since the Calamity Trigger novel describes Take-Mikazuchi’s blasts as light, and the raws even use 光 and 光線 (or "light" and "beam/light ray"). This light is said to travel straight toward the ground and possess heat, but the same page also depicts that “light” as showing force and exploding, two things actual light doesn’t have and can’t do.

It’s also worth noting that for the most part Rachel doesn’t react to these blasts either. Nearly all versions of Calamity Trigger, whether it’s the game, anime, manga, or novel, have Tsukuyomi already summoned while Take-Mikazuchi was charging its energy. This doesn’t change when Rachel blocks its blast in Chronophantasma. By the time it fires, we see the Tsukuyomi Unit has already been fully summoned, and nothing in the scene suggests this was done in tandem with its blast.

You may have noticed I said “for the most part” and “nearly all versions of Calamity Trigger,” because there’s one version of this where Rachel actually does react to the blast mid-fire. In the obscure Blazblue manga by Yoshioka Sakaki, Rachel summons the Tsukuyomi Unit while the blast is traveling from the satellite to Earth. Since Rachel has enough time to speak the entire mantra needed to summon Tsukuyomi, this means the timeframe for the blast would be about 5 seconds. Depending on whether or not you use the game’s stated altitude of 36,000, this would make its speed anywhere from Mach 5311.21 at lowest or 2.4% the speed of light at most!

TL;DR

Fully scaling anyone to Take-Mikazuchi’s AP is impossible. Thanks to the massive timeframe needed to build up its energy, we can only scale the cast to a small portion of the Hierarchical Cities’ destruction based on when they fought it. However, you can still scale them to its blast speed using the manga where Rachel summons Tsukuyomi in tandem with the blast.

Ice Cavalry scaling

Near the end of Akame Ga Kill, one of the main villains, Esdeath, begins using her trump card to create a cavalry of ice soldiers to battle Night Raid and the other rebels. These ice soldiers are later shown threatening Incursio Stage 2 Tatsumi to the point he admitted an individual soldier was formidable on its own. Despite this, not only could Tatsumi still destroy multiple soldiers as the fight went on, some nameless Teigu users got in on the action as well!

This Ice Cavalry is later absorbed by Esdeath to unleash Ice Storm Commander in Chief, a country-spanning snow storm that covers everything in ice and snow. Since this army was made up of tens of thousands of ice soldiers, that would mean there are at least 10,000 soldiers that individually contributed to Esdeath’s Ice Storm, meaning each of them would be carrying a small amount of energy from that storm.

To find the power a single soldier would contain, we’d need to take the total yield of Esdeath Ice Storm and divide it by 10,000. The only problem is actually finding that yield. There have been numerous attempts throughout the years to calculate this feat, and the results get anywhere from City to Country, Multi-Continental, or even Planet, and those are just a few examples. So what would the soldiers get with these calcs? If we use the examples linked above:

WeeklyBattles’s Akame Ga Kill: Ice Storm Commander in Chief Recalc would give them 10.146 kilotons of TNT. Arsonlordofficial’s calc would get 105.38 gigatons at max. Death Battle’s Gray vs Esdeath would bump them considerably into 28.05 teratons, and Morning Star TM’s Akame ga Kill - Esdeath’s Ice Storm Commander-In-Chief Redux 3 would give them 2.08 exatons. In other words, one soldier in Esdeath’s army could be placed anywhere from Town Level to Island, Country, or Multi-Continental depending on which calc you use.

With all that said, does Leone scale to any of this?

No.

On the surface, it would make sense to argue Leone naturally scales above the nameless Teigu wielders that fight the cavalry. However, Tatsumi was fighting the Ice Cavalry in his Incursio armor and admitted they’d give him trouble unless he fought with everything he had. He could only overpower them after evolving, and as we explain in one of the next sections, Leone’s ability to scale to Incursio Tatsumi is non-existent.

The Canal’s size

While this isn’t relevant to Leone since we just explained why she doesn’t scale, we wanted to discuss a point of contention for the Ice Storm Commander in Chief.

There’s been some discussion in the past about the size of the Empire’s Grand Canal and how that might affect the storm’s yield. Measuring at 2,500 km long, it’s been argued the canal’s size is separate from the Capital’s 200,000 km distance, which would in turn make the storm’s horizon distance larger than in real life, its speed faster, and leave Esdeath exerting a larger yield. However, we get a shot of the canal within the Empire’s borders, which would naturally mean those 2,500 km are simply just considered part of the total 200,000.

Does Leone scale to Shikoutazer or other high tier feats?

You might’ve noticed a few feats we labeled telling you to check this section for whether Leone would scale, these being Budo’s storm feats, Shikoutazer’s feats of creating an explosion that leaves a large mushroom cloud and crater, and Esdeath’s country-spanning storm.

And to cut to the chase, she doesn’t scale to any of these, either.

Leone was one-shot by Budo, who previously knocked Tatsumi out of Incursio in a single hit and required Tatsumi to adapt with Incursio just to leave a cut on him.

Esdeath casually outsped Leone, one-shot her by stomping her into the ground, then went on to torture her just for the hell of it. During a later fight with the Empire, Leone barely managed to push Akame and Mine away from Esdeath’s attack. If that wasn’t enough to discourage the idea of Leone scaling to Esdeath, here’s Esdeath after Budo’s death outright stating the only people who stand a chance against her are Akame and Tatsumi. And wouldn’t you know it, we also have Incursio Tatsumi, who by this point was evolving by the second against Shikoutazer, still being worried at the prospect of fighting Esdeath.

With all this in mind, there is no way Leone would scale to Shikoutazer, a mech capable of leaving Incursio Tatsumi near-death and forcing him to push his adapting powers to the point of being overtaken by Incursio after beating it.

So where does that leave her? Check the verdict to find out.

Verdict

Stats

Comparing these two beastly side characters, it’s fairly obvious who takes the stat trinity.

With how many times she’s consistently beaten him, if not portrayed as close physically, it’s only natural to scale Makoto to Tager’s feat of leaping into the atmosphere and tanking the fall, which at its highest would net 5.929 kilotons - 10.489 kilotons. Though it’s still possible to get her higher.

We’ve already explained why Makoto doesn’t scale to the high tiers and planetary feats, but we can still reasonably scale her to the lower stuff. Thanks to her fights with Tsubaki and her Izayoi form, which were able to injure Jin and defeat him and Noel (even if Jin was in a weakened state and Noel didn’t want to fight), you could get her somewhere into the echelons of scaling to Take-Mikazuchi. We’ve already explained that fully scaling to Take-Mikazuchi isn’t possible, but this doesn’t mean she’s exempt from downscaling to it.

Officially, Chronophantasma and Centralfiction represent one of its blasts, Ibukido’s, using this screenshot from Calamity Trigger Reconstruction’s intro cutscene. However, the Variable Heart manga, which was released after Centralfiction’s arcade, gives us a full shot of the crater.

Using these calculations for the explosion and crater and applying the downscaling formula in the Before the Verdict section, this would leave Makoto scaling to 80.167 megatons for the former and 99.406 megatons for the latter. And just to add more consistency, we could also scale her to Mai’s “Royal Crimson Sprout: New Moon Lotus,” which comes out to 83 megatons.

Admittedly, this is only keeping things at the lower end, and we’ve explained above how other Take-Mikazuchi blasts could get higher results, but Makoto doesn’t need them. And we don’t need to dip our toes into higher interpretations like scaling to Kokonoe tanking a meteor drop for 892 teratons. Like Makoto, Leone’s sidelined for a lot of the series, but unlike Makoto, she doesn't fight anyone that could give her higher scaling.

With how she’s regularly curbstomped by higher ranking members of the Empire like Budo and Esdeath, the only things Leone can scale to are early or casual feats from her teammates or enemies. The highest of these types of feats would be Kurome’s Death Tagool destroying a ton of rock with its laser breath and Mine creating a trench with Pumpkin, which would be worth 520.99 kilotons and 896.23 kilotons.

Comparing these yields to the Take-Mikazuchi blasts, this would make Makoto over 153 - 190 times stronger vs Death Tagool’s blast or over 89 - 110 times stronger with Mine’s! But if you want to go even more overkill, we could scale Makoto to Kokonoe tanking her own meteor. That would widen the gap into over 995 million times stronger with Mine’s feat, and over ONE BILLION with Death Tagool’s!

Fortunately, speed is closer… depending on how you interpret it.

Going back to the Tager feat, being able to leap into the atmosphere and descend in seconds would put him at Mach 773.426 for the ascent and 1028.708 for the descent. Leone could scale to Akame dodging lightning, which could be anywhere from Mach 66 to 924.62. Using the highest end of that lightning feat, Leone would be 1.11 times slower.

However, that’s taking the best speed feat in Akame Ga Kill and comparing it to a lower end feat from Blazblue.

If we use an equally high end speed feat for Blazblue, we’d be comparing Akame’s lightning dodge to Rachel reacting to Take-Mikazuchi’s blast. And depending on whether you use the measurements from the manga panel or what’s stated in-game, this would be a reaction speed of Mach 5311.12 - 2.4% the speed of light, respectively. This would bump Makoto anywhere from 5.74 - 22.7 times faster.

With how large of a difference there is between them, Makoto takes stats.

Tertiaries

Onto tertiaries and it is quite close. Both are very skilled members of their respective organizations, often stealthy and accurate with their intel gathering as well as their hand-to-hand. While Makoto’s experience is nothing to scoff at, Leone has had way more direct showings of her skill, taking on an army of goons while Makoto can take on just 2 or 3 opponents no problem.

Leone’s battle tactics are also superior. Playing dead, snapping necks, and her previous life as a con artist and thief are all things Makoto hasn’t really shown any prowess in herself. Leone also has the superior endurance. Makoto is no slouch, but she has never willingly gone into battle with just one arm like Leone has. Lionelle really does wonders for Leone in that regard.

Leone’s more on-screen showings of battle prowess allow her to take tertiaries.

Equipment

Comparing these two, Leone is ultimately better. Makoto doesn’t have much to work. Her tonfas are just metal sticks without anything special, and as funny as it is that her acorn can bypass super moves, that doesn’t compare to Lionelle. Lionelle is the main source of Leone’s powers, which is far more useful in battle compared to what Makoto has.

Speaking of which…

Powers

This one is a weird case to talk about.

With Leone’s enhanced sense of smell and Makoto’s animal-like instincts, they’d essentially cancel out each other’s main strategies of creating illusions and relying on stealth. You’d think Makoto being able to perceive events in slow motion might give her the edge here, but there’s a major difference between dodging a slap from a normal teenager with no combat training and fighting a woman who can leave sonic booms just by moving.

Similarly, Leone’s ability to adapt mid-battle sounds like it would be useful on paper, but with the enormous speed gap between them, it’s unlikely she’d be able to adapt to Makoto’s movements in time.

Her regeneration could potentially help her outlast… if Makoto didn’t have ranged options like energy balls and enormous fist constructs that would also create a wider distance between them. Plus, there’s the possibility that Makoto’s enormous edge in strength just lets her KO Leone in one punch. It has been shown before in Akame ga Kill that a large enough strength gap will just let you knock her out, no worries about regen.

You think their forms would change something, but with the stat gap in mind, it’s a minuscule change at best. Leone does have a longer lasting strength and speed boost (which isn’t saying much when Makoto’s caps out at 15 seconds), but there’s no way it would make up for the difference between their stats.

What about the Power of Order? Didn’t Relius say Makoto unlocked it after overcoming her fear of him and thinking about her friends? Wouldn't that give Makoto some extra advantages that could turn the fight in her favor?

No.

Makoto has never displayed any of the Power of Order’s abilities, and the only “proof” she has it is one line from Relius that isn’t even concrete. It’s just him speculating that she might have it. Even if we gave it to her, it would be completely worthless in this debate. The Power of Order is mainly used in the series to resist mental abilities, such as Jin preventing Izayoi from enforcing death into his mind and resisting the effects of phenomenon intervention, a form of reality warping that can rewrite memories.

None of these would apply to Leone since she lacks any mental attacks for it to fend off, and the one ability that would be useful in most circumstances- making the user equal in power to their opponent -required Jin to fully unlock the Power of Order and maintain his conviction mid-battle. So not only would Makoto not be able to access this ability normally, it would be a detriment if she did. With how much she naturally outclasses Leone in power, this would drag her down to Leone’s level and ensure that, if nothing else, Leone would now be able to regen from her attacks no problem. Even if you want to argue Makoto actually does have the Power of Order in her arcade, refer back to the start of the previous paragraph (and the previous sentence).

Long story short, Leone does have the better powers, it’s just that Makoto’s astronomical stat advantage renders them moot.

Conclusion

This battle wasn’t easy to figure out at first but when you look at the facts…

Yeah.

Leone’s Teigu is overall a better tool than Makoto’s weapons and has more showings of overall battle experience. However, all of that is completely null when you look at how big the stat gap is. Makoto is always faster and undeniably stronger than anything you can reasonably scale Leone to.

There really isn’t much else other than that this cat had her tail caught between her legs and paid the ultimate price.

The winner is Makoto Nanaya.
