Quicksilver vs Velocity (Marvel vs Top Cow)

Quicksilver, the mercury mutant of The Avengers!

Velocity, the cyborg speedster from Cyberforce!

When danger comes, you respond with fight or flight: either run toward the danger or run from it. And for some people, nothing’s as dangerous as confronting the weight of their past sins.

For these once villainous speedsters, the world might be in slow motion, but the only thing that can catch up to them is their conscience. Should they flee from what they’ve done and refuse accountability, or should they run toward it, ready to pick up the broken pieces and make the best of their situation?

In this fatal race to the finish, only one can enter first place. Will Quicksilver speed ahead, or will Velocity force his career into a permanent end?

Before We Begin

For this blog, we’ll be focusing on Quicksilver’s mainline appearances from Earth 616. However, Velocity’s going to be a bit different. Cyberforce has three separate continuities:
  • The original continuity that ran from 1992 to 2011
  • The 2012 reboot timeline consisting of Cyberforce (2012), Cyberforce: Artifacts, both volumes of Aphrodite IX, Aphrodite IX/Cyberforce, IXth Generation, and Cyberforce: Shootout
  • The 11 issue reboot from 2018

Because each version of Velocity has a different origin, history, and personality, it’s impossible to fully composite them from a canon perspective, so we’ll be analyzing all three individually.

Background

Quicksilver

The Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. In a team filled with jade giants, gods of thunder, armored billionaires, reality warping witches, and super soldiers from the past, this team has no shortage of powerhouses, but only one can claim the title of their fastest member. He’s the emerald lightning, the silver speedster, the mercury mutant, the twin brother to the Scarlet Witch: Quicksilver!

But before he was an Avenger, Quicksilver… well… to be blunt, Quicksilver’s backstory is a mess. His history has been retconned, retold, and changed so much it might actually rival Donna Troy and Hawkman from DC. But unlike those two, he doesn’t have a cosmic reboot to justify it, so we’ll have to describe his backstory as it’s currently presented in Marvel, retcon-induced plot holes and all… assuming they haven’t added another retcon as we’re writing this!

Currently, Pietro and Wanda Maximoff were the twin children of Natalya Maximoff, a powerful sorceress called the Scarlet Witch. Natalya battled the geneticist supervillain called the High Evolutionary, and upon witnessing her powers and discovering she had children, Evolutionary decided to kidnap and experiment on them to awaken the latent powers they’d inherited through their mother’s magic. But when these infants failed to display any powers, H.E decided to foist them onto one of his creations, a cow lady midwife named Bova. While Bova was staying with them in her cottage, she was visited by Magda, the human wife of the mutant Magneto. Magda had fled into the mountains after witnessing her husband violently murdering an angry mob, and she was close to being due.

With Bova’s help, she gave birth to twins who were originally meant to be Pietro and Wanda, but thanks to the retcons, we don’t actually know who these kids are and they’ve never been addressed since. Not wanting to risk her husband influencing them into a life of violence and evil, Magda left her children with Bova, fled into the wilderness, and died just in time for another pregnant woman to enter Bova’s home! Bova then helped deliver the children of World War II veteran Whizzer and his wife Miss America, but America died after giving birth to a stillborn. Hoping to soften the blow of his wife’s death, Bova hid the stillborn baby and passed off Wanda and Pietro as Whizzer’s children, but he abandoned them out of grief.

Left with no other choice, High Evolutionary forced Bova to deliver Pietro and Wanda to their aunt and uncle Marya and Django Maximoff, whose tribe just happened to be camping near his mountain base. And in another insane coincidence, they also just happened to have recently lost their twin children and were looking to adopt!

Pietro and Wanda were raised by the Maximoffs, possibly unaware of their true relationship (the comics go back and forth if they already knew or actually believed them to be their birth parents). When Django was forced to start stealing to provide for his family, an angry mob attacked them. Quicksilver discovered his super speed when he tried rescuing his sister from the mob’s clutches, but he wasn’t fast enough to prevent Marya from being killed or Django’s supposed death.

With nowhere else to go, Pietro and Wanda wandered Europe until Wanda’s own powers activated and she accidentally burned down a house. Believing she was a witch, a mob formed to kill the two, but they were rescued by the intervention of Magneto. Grateful for their rescue, Pietro and Wanda swore an oath of loyalty to Magneto, who took them under his wing and raised them as if they were his own children. Under Magneto’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, they were given costumes and codenames. Pietro became Quicksilver, and (through sheer coincidence) Wanda took on the name Scarlet Witch.

For years Pietro and Wanda aided Magneto in his quest to prove mutant supremacy, battling their rival group the X-Men, until one day when Magneto was defeated and supposedly killed. Seeing no reason to uphold their oath to a dead man, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch quit the Brotherhood and sought redemption by joining the world-renowned superheroes called the Avengers. Though their relationship with the public was rocky at first, over time both Pietro and Wanda proved themselves to be worthy heroes, remaining on the side of good even when Magneto and a maddened, grief-stricken Django returned to try and guilt them into rejoining their “father.” Quicksilver even became involved with an alien race called the Inhumans, was officially knighted by High Evolutionary as one of the Knights of Wundagore, and stopped a plot to usurp the Inhuman king Black Bolt. Years into their time as Avengers, both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch would get married to their closest teammates and had children, with Wanda joining the synthezoid Vision and Pietro marrying the Inhuman royal Crystal… and these marriages fell apart, to catastrophic results.

Whereas Quicksilver and Crystal split due to her infidelity and had a real daughter named Luna, Wanda’s marriage to Vision was more stable until she was tricked into believing she and Vision had magically conceived children. When she learned the truth and her children disappeared, Wanda snapped, destroying the Avengers’ mansion and leading to multiple members’ deaths. Magneto and Professor X were called in to try and calm her, but nothing worked. In time everyone in the Avengers and the X-Men came to agree that the only way any of this could be resolved was to kill Wanda… except for Quicksilver.

Enraged by their “father” and teammates’ decisions, Quicksilver manipulated Scarlet Witch into using her magic to rewrite the universe and create a new world where everyone had what they wanted. This “House of M” was ruled by Magneto, Pietro, and Wanda, with a thriving population of mutants, but everyone’s memories slowly came back to them. When Magneto discovered what Quicksilver had done in his name, he crushed his son to death, and Wanda’s rage at this caused her to restore reality with three words: “No more mutants.”

The universe was back to normal, but the mutant population was now a fraction of its former self. Where there were once hundreds of thousands of mutants, “M-Day” had only spared around 200 from their depowering, and Pietro wasn’t one of them. The knowledge that he was responsible for mutants losing their powers caused him to fall into a deep depression, and after a conversation with Spider-Man where Peter accidentally affirmed there was no reason he should go on living, Pietro threw himself off a building.

Thankfully, he survived and was nursed back to health by his ex-wife in the Inhumans’ moon base, and while there he learned of a way to restore his lost powers. By bathing in the mists produced by their Terrigen Crystals, it was possible to regain old powers or evolve them. There was just one problem: the Inhumans saw the mists as sacred and would only allow other Inhumans to use them, and Pietro was (formerly) a mutant. Pietro decided to put his own selfish desires over their religious customs and snuck into their chamber, bathing in the mists. This sacrilegious baptism gifted Quicksilver with new powers, and he now had a potential cure to the events he’d caused.

Desperate to make up for his past sins, Quicksilver stole the Terrigen Crystals and teleported to Earth to spread it to any mutant he could find, but the sight of their restored powers quickly went to his head. He began to see himself as a mutant messiah and believed he was carrying out the will of God, even though everyone else could see that the mutant body had negative or even lethal reactions to the mists within seconds of regaining their powers. This ignorance and arrogant attitude came back to bite him when a group of mutants called the X-Cell confronted him over what he’d done, destroyed his supply of crystals, and had him thrown in prison.

Pietro had hit rock bottom, and the once mutant messiah was left rotting in a cell, devoid of powers and plagued by hallucinations of his family. But when he looked out his window and saw a woman about to be murdered, his desperation to save her seemingly restored his lost speed as he broke out and rescued her. This would act as the first step in a long quest for redemption, and he eventually regained his good standing with the Inhumans by returning their crystals and rejoined the Avengers. They even managed to track down Scarlet Witch and helped rehabilitate her without threatening her life this time!

It had taken years of being seen as freaks, forced into villainy, and distrusted by others, but Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch had finally found a place where they belonged. Now, whether he’s aiding the Avengers against Ultron and an evil Captain America, sacrificing himself to remove them from stasis, or helping his sister stop the cosmic embodiment of universal destruction, Quicksilver has shown that it doesn’t matter where he’s from or who raised him. As long as he has his speed, he’ll run circles around any villain that threatens the world!

Oh, and as we were finishing this Marvel updated their website and started calling Wanda a mutant again and went back to calling Magda and Magneto her biological parents. So we may be in for ANOTHER re-retcon sometime soon.

Velocity

From her childhood, all Carin Taylor knew was running. Raised by an abusive alcoholic stepfather, Carin was the constant subject of his physical and verbal abuse, with her only defense coming from her half sister Cassandra Lane. Unfortunately, this did nothing to stop their father, and one night he got so drunk he began beating their mother within an inch of her life. In her desperation to get him to stop, Carin ran out the door to find someone who could help them, but by the time she came back with a policeman, it was too late. Their mom had finally tried to fight back and accidentally killed him.

Shortly after, their house burned down and their mother mysteriously disappeared in the fire, leaving Carin and Cassie as orphans. They’d end up sent to an orphanage where the children constantly bullied Carin, at one point pinning her down and tattooing a lightning bolt over her eye. This miserable experience only came to an end when the orphanage was visited by representatives from the Cyberdata corporation, including the telepathic cyborg Mother May I. Mother saw potential in Carin’s speed and Cassie’s uncanny marksmanship, and the two children were promptly adopted, tossed in the back of a van, and shipped off to Cyberdata’s military program.

Carin and Cassie underwent numerous experimental surgeries, transforming them into cyborgs with the necessary parts to control their latent mutant powers. Cassie was implanted with a Brain Box that brainwashed her and blocked her memories, becoming part of the Special Hazardous Operations Cyborg unit under her new codename: Ballistic. And it seemed that Carin was going to be the next member, already given a spandex suit and her own codename: Velocity!

But right when Cyberdata was about to implant the Brain Box inside her, Velocity escaped, now hounded by her sister and the SHOCs. As she fled from the corporate mercenaries, she ran into Cyberforce, a group of rogue cyborgs intent on dismantling Cyberdata. Though reluctant at first, Cyberforce decided to let her in and helped snap Ballistic out of her brainwashing, adding another member to their ranks.

Over time, Cyberforce became more of a family to Velocity and within the next few years they’d end up taking down Cyberdata. Among the casualties was Mother May I, who turned out to be Velocity and Ballistic’s amnesiac mother, kidnapped and brainwashed years ago after Cyberdata discovered her psychic powers. But even with Cyberdata’s death, its legacy continued to haunt Cyberforce. Whether it was an alien virus unleashed in a last ditch effort to kill them, a neural virus created by a vengeful scientist, or a mad geneticist altering DNA to create a better humanity, Cyberforce took them down each time, and Velocity was there to help them every step of the way!

…then Top Cow rebooted their continuity.

In 2012’s reboot, Carin and Cassie are the teenage daughters of Cyber Data Industries’ chairwoman Fransesca Taylor, with Velocity being from a secret affair with ex-Cyber Data soldier Morgan Stryker. Carin and Cassie were assigned to Cyber Data’s combat unit and given codenames: Velocity and Ballistic. But when she discovered Cyber Data planned on causing an apocalypse and bringing about the end of humanity, Velocity abandoned the company and began running, searching for some way to expose the truth. Her journey eventually led her to Cyberforce, a team made up of rejected experiments led by Stryker. In order to stop Cyber Data’s Aphrodite Protocol, Velocity joined Cyberforce in a battle that lasted years, gradually winding down to when the protocol would activate in 2047.

When that time came, another of Cyber Data’s experiments escaped its labs: the amnesiac Aphrodite generation IX cyborg (and Velocity’s half sister) April. Hoping to regain her memories, Aphrodite IX made her way to the abandoned Cyber Data labs and tracked down her mother, now going by the Chairwoman. But instead of following her programming to kill Francesca and take up her role, Aphrodite spared her, leaving her behind to start a new life. These results were completely unexpected, and with this one action, Aphrodite had unknowingly dashed the very protocol she was created for!

Fortunately for the Chairwoman, Velocity would accidentally fulfill the protocol by killing Fransesca, with her mother using her last moments to direct Carin to a series of holovids explaining the rest of the protocol. These recordings brainwashed Velocity into joining the cause, and figuring humanity was already doomed, she willingly accelerated its death to bring about the protocol’s next phase: ushering in the next stage of human evolution.

For nearly 900 years, Velocity would uncover the IX generation androids in stasis, and when they awakened, she became something of a surrogate mother and teacher, raising them so they could rule what remained of humanity. Once her “children” had begun their duties outlined centuries prior, Velocity went into stasis, ready to finally rest and awaken to a new future…

But instead of the utopia Cyber Data had promised, she awoke to complete chaos.

In the 27 years since she’d entered her pod, everything had gone to hell. The IXs had wiped out the last remains of humanity, and all of their kingdoms were at constant risk of war, which eventually spilled over with the discovery of 13 Artifacts from Earth’s distant past.

The realization that she caused all of this completely broke Velocity, and just to rub salt in the wound, she also uncovered the true purpose behind the Aphrodite Protocol: resurrecting the Chairwoman. Mad with self-loathing, grief, and paranoid that one of the IXs would finish the protocol, Velocity began manipulating her adopted children into killing each other, intent on making sure all of them- even herself -would die before the Chairwoman could resurrect.

In an ironic twist, this actually caused the protocol to reach fruition, with the Chairwoman resurrecting in the body of Velocity’s daughter Hermes. Fransesca celebrated her new life by stabbing Velocity through the stomach and leaving her to bleed out, but in her final moments, Carin entrusted Aphrodite with the Wheel of Shadows, an Artifact that allowed her to bring a permanent end to the Chairwoman…

And then Cyberforce got rebooted again!

Thanks to Aphrodite IX killing the Chairwoman in the past, it created a new timeline where Velocity was now the paraplegic 18 year old daughter of Stryker. After an explosion from a mysterious assailant (a future version of this series’ Aphrodite) nearly killed her father, Carin signed a contract with Cyberdata to give them experimental implants that would save his life and let her walk. And to prevent a dystopian future, she and her father banded together with Cyberdata’s Aphrodite prototype, the lone wolf Ripclaw, and disfigured medic Dominique Siebault to fight Cyberdata… is what I would say, but the series was canceled after 11 issues and ended on a cliffhanger.

But no matter what continuity she’s in, Velocity will always be there to oppose Cyberdata’s reign, ready to run them down for a better future!

Experience, Intelligence, and Skill

Quicksilver

Throughout his decades of publishing history, Quicksilver has built up a ton of experience in his time with the Brotherhood, Avengers, and Inhumans. Even at a young age, he had to survive against hired assassins while he & Wanda were sleeping, and as an adult he’s received CQC training from Captain America. Even before that, despite his claim of not being the best fighter, he still beat the mutant Mr. X, who had the ability to read minds and predict his opponent’s next move and wielded The All-Father Odin’s spear, while only being armed with rebar. He’s fought knights with the Uncanny Avengers and even fought a war alongside the Inhumans without his powers by using firearms.

Pietro was already fairly smart in the academic and puzzle-solving sense with things like quickly solving a Rubik's Cube and a puzzle set, having excellent sculpting skills, learning to play the piano in a few panels, and being trained to fly spaceships, but his years of being a superhero have given him numerous instances of quick thinking and a fairly strategic mind.

He’s surpassed Magneto’s security systems through sheer speed, reprogrammed security systems, easily disabled bombs without setting them off, and twisted out of Vision’s grip despite hardening his body. He has enough knowledge on telepathy to use it as a form of communication to inform his teammates of a Cosmic Cube being used to alter their identities, he analyzed micro-expressions from a person, developed a plan to distract the Super-Adaptoid and overtax his powers, distracted enemy soldiers by deliberately moving slower to draw their fire while the Avengers snuck past, and planned out an infiltration on Doom’s Castle by combining their knowledge of Latveria’s underground passageways with his and Vision’s phasing abilities.

Even without his powers, Pietro fought a war alongside the Inhumans with firearms. His time in the Inhumans militia also let him learn more about tactics and gave him better strategic thinking.

Aside from strategies, Quicksilver is a surprisingly good manipulator. He was the one that convinced The Scarlet Witch to rewrite reality and cause House of M to happen, then when he wanted redemption he was able to trick the Inhumans into thinking a Skrull impostor had framed him for stealing the Terrigen crystals.

He’s shown on multiple occasions that he can weaponize even the most mundane objects in his surroundings. He ripped the graphite padding out of a nearby computer and used it to blind Cyclops’ visor, turned wood into deadly weapons while fighting Magneto and a robot copy of Scarlet Witch, beat one of Radioactive Man’s robots with a pipe, knocked out Thundra with a stop sign, and beat up Mr. X with rebar.

Original Velocity

Thanks to her years on the field, Velocity has gained plenty of experience in her time with Cyberforce.

She’s received basic self defense training during her time in Cyberdata’s SHOCs, and while she doesn’t often get the chance to fight others hand to hand, she’s become an expert at running around the battlefield and improvising with her surroundings.

She’s defeated a Cyberdata maximum security droid by wrapping it in a hose and sending it into the ocean, destroyed Cyberdata drones by bludgeoning and impaling them with pipes, performed similar beatings with rebar, and weaponized dumpsters by pushing them into opponents at super speed. And after using debris as a pair of knuckledusters, she tricked the nearly invulnerable Charnel into falling off a building and impaling himself on an I beam, leaving him open long enough to douse him in gasoline and burn him alive.

Velocity’s later adventures have her use her speed to manipulate the environment in similar ways, like running at mach 7 to kick up a whirlwind and throw parked cars at robots.

She’s also skilled at hacking, having reprogrammed Dr. Erasmus Paine’s Velocity androids as part of a plan to cure Cyberforce of his virus

2012 Velocity

Unlike her previous counterpart, 2012’s Velocity doesn’t have much to cover. She does have some combat experience by tearing apart robots, killing two Cyberdata troops and the Chairwoman, battling the IX generation cyborgs Artemis, Ares, and Aphrodite, and slaughtering multiple Aphrodite XVs. Out of all these, battling Aphrodite IX is impressive since she’d previously killed at least 30 people and was programmed with knowledge of all martial arts disciplines and the use of all known weapons.

This Velocity is also much older than the original. Despite being younger at first (only being 16 by the start of the reboot’s story), she’s still alive by the year 2827, having spent almost 900 years overseeing the IXs and keeping Cyberdata’s Aphrodite Protocol on track.

2018 Velocity

2018’s Velocity has even less to her than 2012. Across her series’ 11 issues, her only contributions are assisting her team in a fight to calm Ripclaw and knocking out some of Cyberdata’s guards.

Equipment

Quicksilver

SPIKE Sneakers

Quicksilver once ran from New York to Los Angeles… in less than fourteen hours! And he did it in SPIKE SNEAKERS!!! Buy and get one today!

Energy Gauntlets

While training with the X-Men, Pietro received gauntlets that appear to generate energy to deliver enhanced punches while sparring, appearing to keep them after he leaves.

Concussive-Blast Rifle

(Basically the only name for this unnamed gun)

Quicksilver stole a gun that can shoot a blast of concussive-force.

Grenades

Mostly used by Pietro as a distraction against Exodus in this panel shown, as while he was fast enough to shoot down the grenades, he wasn’t fast enough for a beatdown by Pietro himself.

Sword

After being knighted by the High Evolutionary and made the leader of the Knights of Wundagore, Quicksilver received his own sword, which he used in a fencing match with Sir Ram. And while it’s not the same sword, he did use a similar one during a sword fight with Black Knight.

Ruinsaw of Giza

After The Griever at the End of All Things killed Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver stole a buzzsaw his sister collected and used it to destroy the Griever’s conduits and kill her minions, the Endlings.

Terrigen Mists/Crystals

Following House of M and a failed suicide attempt due to being depowered, Quicksilver was brought to the Inhumans’ moon base for healing. And being the kind, generous soul he is, Pietro thanked them by violating their customs and bathing himself in their sacred Terrigen Mists. While this didn’t restore his speed (it took Chthon’s Chaos Wave for that), it did grant him new powers. He could now evolve the latent X-gene in depowered mutants to restore their powers or enhance them, and by concentrating he could send himself into the future.

As time went on and the mist’s effects faded, Quicksilver resorted to stealing the Inhumans’ Terrigen Crystals and began inserting them into his body to retain his new powers, often doing so with multiple crystals at a time. However, his supply was eventually destroyed when Rictor vibrated them out of his body.

Original Velocity

Jett

A mass-produced invention covertly distributed by Cyberdata, the Jett is a voice-activated earpiece lighter than an earring that gives voice-activated access to all personal data. Powered by the user’s body heat, the Jett is always tied to the Internet and lets you access anything, including documents, spreadsheets, games, movies, and TV. They’re also tied to the user’s DNA sampling so they can only be used by one person, and lost models can be tracked on any computer.

But surprise, surprise, it turns out a corrupt megacorporation having access to your DNA has a more nefarious purpose behind it. The Jetts also contain Cyberdata’s nanotechnology Brain Boxes, letting them re-code the user’s genetic structure and infecting them with a tattoo graft called a Technoderm. This graft mutates their users and gives them superpowers at the cost of driving them mad. And thanks to owning one, Velocity ended up among the infected.

2012 Velocity

Dual Knives

Used to slit the throats of two Cyberdata troopers and kill the Chairwoman.

Metal Limbs

By the time Aphrodite IX took place, Velocity’s body was upgraded to have orange metal limbs and a spandex/mesh covering the torso. No, that isn’t armor. It’s technically her “skin” since she wears clothes over it.

The Rapture

One of the legendary 13 Artifacts, the Rapture grants its wielder a suit of brimstone armor, the ability to visit Hell, and ferry souls to and from it on a whim by granting hope to those trapped there or taking it away. While Velocity never uses it, the comic treats her having it as a big reveal.

The Wheel of Shadows

Another of the 13 Artifacts, the Wheel of Shadows grants its wielder complete control over the effects and passage of time, and whenever they use it, their body turns pitch black. They can speed up or slow down time at their whim, letting them get a speed boost by slipping between seconds, rapidly age humans or monsters, or reverse it and restore youth to the elderly. Even immortals who can resist the aging effects will still have their strength drained.

The time acceleration can be unleashed as an AOE attack, aging those around the user to death in seconds and decaying their surroundings.

It’s shown a few other abilities like solidifying time to create a defensive barrier or giving its user visions of the future, but they’re nothing compared to the Wheel’s ultimate power.

The Wheel allows its users to go back in time on a whim. Velocity used this to witness the start of the Aphrodite Protocol and monitor her mother’s final days, but that’s all she used it for. She fears what would happen if she directly interfered and only encouraged Aphrodite to change the past moments before dying.

Despite these fears and other characters expressing similar worries, Aphrodite was still alive and the future was still intact afterward since her actions created an alternate timeline.

The Blood Sword

Also known as the Ketsuma no Katana, this Artifact was forged when a shaman summoned a demon and bound its essence into a katana. It’s been passed to various wielders throughout the centuries, and Velocity briefly wielded it during her war against the IXs before the Chairwoman used it to kill her.

When first unsheathed, it appears as a regular blade, but if blood is spilled near it or a fight begins, it will start glowing red.

The Blood Sword can communicate with its wielder and increases their strength based on the amount of blood spilled, but anyone who uses it becomes compelled to kill and a slave to their own bloodlust even without the sword

In terms of other abilities, the Blood Sword can create an aura around its wielder to prevent them from being aged to death, and it fuels their strength from the rage of the souls it’s claimed.

2018 Velocity

Metal Implants

As part of a contract with Cyberdata to ensure her father’s survival after a fatal accident and ensure she’d no longer be paraplegic, 2018’s Velocity was given cybernetic implants that let her run at 120 mph and kick through a stone wall.

Body Armor

Given to her by Cyberdata, Velocity wears this bland shit for the entire run. Sure, it might give her some protection, but it looks generic and soulless just like everything else in this reboot.

Powers

Quicksilver

Super Speed

Being the Marvel universe’s resident speedster, Quicksilver has the power to run really quick. Official guidebooks list him as being able to move anywhere from 175 mph, Mach 2, and even up to 31,680 mph (or Mach 41.29). His speed has even allowed him to move in the timeframe of microseconds & split-microseconds to picoseconds too. This speed can be used to magnify his strength by many times, and even at high speed, he retains enough maneuverability to outpace even those with comparable speed to himself. In the Gamer’s Handbook to The Marvel Universe, he can use his “lightning” speed to clock at remarkable speeds at any angle or while swimming as well. This ludicrous speed even lets him outspeed the telepath Mr. X even when his thoughts are read, outpacing him by the time the synapses in his brain tell him Quicksilver’s actions. Speaking of brains, Pietro can “speed read,” and retain any information he learns for days at best, often only hours, but he can learn anything in seconds.

He’s been known to weaponize his speed during battle or whenever he’s been captured. This includes spinning to get himself free of Medusa’s hair, disarming some Kree at super speed and juggling their guns while firing them, running fast enough to create a sonic boom to repel the Venom symbiote, creating sonic booms with a snap, running fast enough to cause an ocean to boil and the air to heat up, or creating unique electrostatic charges through each of his footsteps which he then projects as lightning. However, his most common strategy is to ricochet himself around his surroundings to barrel into enemies.

During Avengers #688, Quicksilver would reach his fastest speed yet, as due to the mental barriers in head, they kept Pietro from running at his most peak speeds, but due to the dire situation with the beacon that was too fast to catch, even for him, he had Synapse & Wanda break his mental barriers and thus he was finally able to take the beacon, but in the process, disappeared. As Doctor Voodoo explained after this comic in Avengers #690, Pietro essentially ran so fast he “moved beyond the limits of speed as we know it, it’s quite possible he moved beyond the bounds of our physical reality”, requiring Voodoo & Wanda to travel to dimensions beyond space and time to find Quicksilver. After this comic, the rest of Quicksilver: No Surrender found Pietro unstuck from time itself in one of the aforementioned dimensions after finally catching the beacon and smashing it, while enduring the shredding of his body from the sheer speed. After some journeying of himself in the dimension, he returned back to physical reality in a race against his doppelganger from the dimension, through sheer anger, thus accepting himself and defeating his doppelganger.

His biggest feat though wasn’t even the previous feat through, as in Scarlet Witch Vol 4 #4 he built up enough extremely fast speed to use the momentum to knee in The Griever at the End of All Things so hard, her essence scattered across time, prolonging her ability to regenerate for a few million years.

Superhuman Endurance

Pietro isn’t just able to run really fast, but he can run really fast for long amounts of time. His innate physiology allows for this as he can exhale the toxins that would normally accumulate in his body when performing any kind of physical exertion, allowing him to avoid fatigue. His body’s adapted to withstand the impact of his feet hitting the ground 30 times per second and impacts that would shatter a normal man, his tendons have the resilience of high tensile steel, and he metabolizes food so quickly there’s no waste.

According to the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z Vol 1 9, “His cardiovascular, respiratory and metabolic systems are far more efficient than human norms, his body generates virtually no fatigue poisons, his joints are highly lubricated his bones are super-durable, his reaction time is augmented, and his eyes remain moist in high-velocity winds.”

Enhanced Senses

Perhaps as a byproduct of his enhanced perceptions, Pietro can sense things coming such as surprise attacks coming before other mutants with enhanced senses like Wolfsbane could even realize they were being attacked. He manipulated his static charge to navigate 7,000 miles to New York Harbor by Earth’s trembling magnetic field and he could also perceive a beacon that was keeping some of The Avengers in stasis as a blue orb, which not even The Avengers sensors could pick up.

Enhanced Healing

As a benefit of having an enhanced metabolism, Pietro heals faster than normal humans. After being overwhelmed by demons and beaten by them, the damage done to him healed at “eccentric speeds.” (this is consistent). Though this does appear to be limited to minor cuts, bruises, and possibly concussions.

Vortex Creation

Quicksilver can use his incredible speeds to whip up mini tornados by running around in a circle, spinning his arms, or spinning himself into a tornado. This power has regularly been used to generate air cushions to soften impacts, put out fires, lift enemies into the air, and suffocate enemies, including giant monsters. His vortexes are fast and devastating enough to be compared to his ex-wife Crystal's aerokinesis, can be used as a barrier able to block and redirect Captain America’s shield, can shred Mordred’s armor, and are able to prevent infections of the Xerogen gas.

Even if there’s not enough room to create regular vortexes, he can vibrate his fists to create miniature ones.

Vibrating/Phasing

Like most speedsters in fiction, Quicksilver is capable of vibrating his molecules at high speeds to phase through matter. He could have vibrated out of Lockjaw's bite if the Fantastic Four and Inhumans didn't immediately intervene, phase out of a cocoon made of tight adhesives, the doors of Doctor Doom’s castle, and a strong grip from Mr. X. Even a synthetic copy of him can vibrate his body to match Vision’s lowered density.

He can vibrate his fingers to increase the frequency of his whistle and when angry he can shake fast enough to produce wind shear.

While he’s shown many instances of phasing through a(n) person or object, he can also do so to make said object explode, like a brick wall, Deadpool’s phone, or a robot; or people, like a small group of The Frightful 400 and their Berserker, who was considered unbreakable.

Flight

A unique and lesser used spinoff from his vibrating ability, Quicksilver in his early days learned that by vibrating his legs while running at top speed, he could briefly fly short distances. This makes him even faster than he is on land, but it only lasts for a few seconds and is useless against a more agile opponent.

Invisibility

Relatively early in Quicksilver’s history, Pietro’s superspeed somehow allowed him to appear invisible to people even faster than him. This let him escape the (then) faster Monica Rambeau despite her being able to perceive her surroundings at her top speed.

The following are from the Terrigen Mists/Crystals:

Power Restoration

Thanks to breathing in the Terrigen Mists or injecting himself with its crystals, Quicksilver was able to restore the powers of many mutants that were depowered by M-Day. Though this sounds benevolent, these restorations only function normally for a few seconds before becoming warped or twisted. As an example, he restored Callisto’s previous enhanced senses, but within seconds they were enhanced to the point of sensory overload and agonizing pain. If Quicksilver touched someone who still had their powers, they would experience a rapid cellular decay that left them unconscious for hours before eventually dying.

Time Travel

After his first time bathing in the Terrigen mists, Pietro’s speed was restored, albeit not in the way he intended. He discovered he gained the power to travel directly into the future. By vibrating his atoms (or molecules) at a high enough speed and visualizing time rushing past him, his body will go out of sync with the space-time continuum, letting him remain in the future as long as he likes. Whenever he decides to go back, his body will return to the same time he left, but in the same physical location he was at in the future. During this trip back, any objects he’s holding will come with him, but he can’t use this on people.

At first he could only go a few days into the future and would return as soon as he got tired. As time went on, he eventually gained more control over it, learning how to go days, hours, or seconds into the future. At his peak he could “time-jump” months ahead and spend several days there before heading back to the present, though by his own admission, no matter how hard he tries, he’s unable to change the future.

He can utilize this time travel in combat by “jumping” seconds into the future to summon copies of himself to gang up on his enemies. There’s only one problem: should something happen to one of these future selves, like being kicked in the nuts, the rest of the Quicksilvers will “catch up” and merge back into him.

All Velocities

Super Speed

Like her opponent, the original Velocity is a mutant with the power of super speed. While her exact limits are unknown, official guidebooks have clocked her at over 3000 miles per hour, and it’s said her speed increases with age, though she’s moved much faster in later adventures. She’s run at mach 7 to kick up a whirlwind that throws parked cars at robots, run across Monument Valley at 10,000 mph in a canon crossover, and even outran a radio wave by pushing herself to her limits!

The other Velocities are purely cyborgs whose limits and additional enhancements are unknown. 2012 seemingly has enhanced perception since she claims ninety seconds is an eternity for her, and she’s fast enough to disappear from sight and dodge a rocket launcher while killing advanced cyborgs. 2018 can run at 120 mph and was fast enough to pull people out of a base before it could be hit by missiles.

Cyborg Physiology

As a result of Cyberdata’s experiments, Velocity was given cybernetic enhancements to help compensate for her super speed. She has an electronic chip embedded in her head that enhances her reflexes and lets her make calculations to adjust her movements so she won’t run into objects at high speeds. She was surgically modified to have an unbreakable layer of kevlar-like substance under her skin (earlier guidebooks outright call it Kevlar, with one saying it was bonded to her skin at the molecular level) to protect from friction, high speed impacts, and injuries. It also prevents the extreme friction of her speed from tearing or burning her body.

While the other Velocities are also cyborgs, the original is the only one whose enhancements were given any focus. Her 2012 and 2018 counterparts have nothing to talk about besides the metal limbs that were already brought up in Equipment.

Original Velocity

Ultra-Sapien Physiology

In addition to her cybernetic implants from Cyberdata, Velocity owning their mass-produced Jett earpieces led to her being infected by Morningstar’s Technoderm tattoo grafts. This rewrote her DNA, transforming her arms into crystalline claws and giving her an enhanced healing factor that lets her heal from being shot in the leg at super speed.

This infection is permanent, only rendered dormant by Damper’s powers keeping the Jetts’ data stream in check, though Velocity can still activate her Ultra-Sapien powers if her concentration slips. Should this happen, she’ll automatically regrow her claws and gain a strength boost.

Vortex Creation

By running fast enough or twirling her arm, Velocity can create a vortex to suffocate her opponent or knock them back.

Vibrating

After being grabbed by a giant man, Velocity escaped by vibrating her body to set his hand on fire.

Resistances

Quicksilver

Probability Manipulation:
Somehow, Quicksilver can block and remain unaffected by his sister Wanda’s Hex Bolts even though they could mess up Jean Grey in the same issue.

Transmutation:
Mutants like Quicksilver were naturally more resistant and took longer to be affected by Ultron-13’s Robotizing Spray, which transforms organic beings into machines

Destruction:
His metabolism rendered him resistant to the decaying power of Famine, a Horseman of Apocalypse, who dessicated Beast with just a touch earlier.

Extreme Temperatures:
His accelerated metabolism gives him an incredible resistance to cold temperatures, letting him withstand running into Storm’s blizzard and a blizzard high in the mountains. His vibrating molecules protect him from the friction of the air and the flash-boiler ocean water too.

Fire:
Pushed through Pyro’s flames through pure durability.

Lightning:
Survived and recovered from a strike of lightning from Thunder Dragons that harmed his Uncanny Avenger teammates.

Shockwaves:
Didn’t even notice the shockwaves he generated across a 50-meter radius.

Biological Manipulation:
Recovered quickly after Magneto froze the iron in his blood.

Poisons:
Quicksilver’s accelerated metabolism processes in alcohol so quickly, it takes him a ton of drinks to actually get drunk.

Mind Manipulation (limited):
By moving fast enough, he should be able to replicate the time he dodged Exodus’s psi-bolts and even AOE mental attack.

Precognition:
Even when Mr. X gets a hold of Pietro’s thoughts, Pietro just outpaces Mr. X’s synapse firing into his brain to act out on an attack.

Blood, Death, and Soul Manipulation:
When an inverted Scarlet Witch cast a spell on her family that would “Crush their bones! Boil their blood dry in their veins! Rupture their souls! End the line,” Pietro was affected, but survived the curse, though he was so injured he needed Magneto to support him.

Original Velocity

Heat, friction, and injuries:
Because of the unbreakable kevlar-like substance under her skin, Velocity’s unaffected by the heat and friction of her speed, and is less likely to get injured by high speed impacts.

Viruses:
Her enhanced metabolism lets her stave off Erasmus Paine’s virus, which affects the nervous system.

Cold temperatures:
Her metabolism lets her search a freezing cold wasteland for hours.

Quicksilver

Lockjaw

In his time as part of the Inhumans’ royal family thanks to his marriage to Crystal, Quicksilver now shared the responsibility and free use of the family’s pet, Lockjaw. Born from amongst a litter of pups whose mother was experimented on by the Inhuman Genetic Council, Lockjaw was born with the power to teleport across space-time.

Lockjaw is one of the best teleporters in all of Marvel, being able to make "dimensional hops" up to 240,000 miles away, other dimensions such as the Negative Zone, and even alternate timelines. And he can do all of this "at the speed of thought". And he isn’t just a means of transport but he’s also an attack dog. He’s grappled with and stated to be stronger than an early Hulk, briefly overpowered the Silver Surfer, and his bite strength could hold down the Thing. His reflexes are also quite fast, being able to catch Quicksilver himself. Lockjaw’s antennas also allow him to perform energy manipulation, firing blasts that harm opponents that can knock down Black Bolt and generating forcefields to protect nearby allies.

As you can expect, Quicksilver has used Lockjaw primarily for transportation over distances he can’t run to conventionally such as from the Moon to Earth, using him the first time to… kidnap Franklin Richards and command him to attack the Power Pack… Jesus Christ, Pietro. Thankfully, Pietro doesn’t need to travel to wherever it is the Inhumans are currently staying just to pick up Lockjaw. This is in fact mainly how Quicksilver commands Lockjaw, as a crutch to teleport himself and his allies away if he himself is too injured to carry everyone and run. But he’s also used him to track down people he's looking for thanks to Lockjaw's senses, which are interdimensional in range and tell him when someone he knows and cares about is in danger. He’s even able to somehow detect mental energies to hone on.

How exactly does Pietro bring him into the fight? Well Quicksilver has a specific whistle he performs by vibrating his fingers at superspeed that Lockjaw specifically responds to whenever Pietro needs him. And after paying a visit to Hank Pym, Quicksilver was given Pym Particles that let him shrink down Lockjaw to pocket size and grow him back to full size when he needs him. Such as when he injured himself fighting against Magneto and Scarlet Witch, but used Lockjaw to teleport all three of them to his fellow West Coast Avengers to jump those two.

2012 Velocity

Hermes XVs

Sentient android replicas of her daughter that were originally made to act as Hermes’ enforcers, but were later convinced by Velocity to betray her. This gave her access to an army of soldiers equipped with laser rifles, but their exact number is never specified.

Air Fleet

During the attack on Aphrodite’s city of New Cythera, Velocity deployed an entire fleet of futuristic ships to aid her by ramming into buildings or any defenses in their way. It’s unknown if they have any offensive capabilities besides this, as they spend most of their time in the background.

Scaling

Quicksilver

Scarlet Witch

Throughout his adventures with the Avengers and his sister, Pietro has occasionally helped Wanda or been forced to fight against her, whether he’s punched her while she was possessed by Chthon, nearly choked her out by generating a funnel around her, contained the combined magic of her, their mom, and Agatha; or the numerous times he’s withstood her blasts and Hex Bolts, including when she was possessed. He’s even fought High Evolutionary and torn his armor apart when both Rogue and Scarlet Witch were unable to damage him, and was able to mortally wound the Griever at the End of All Things after she’d just killed a Darkhold-amped Scarlet Witch. And in terms of speed, he’s blitzed Wanda in the past, casually disappeared from her sight, and moved so fast she couldn’t perceive him.

In addition to all of this, it was later revealed that because the Maximoff twins are both Nexus Beings, together they could become the Ultimate Nexus, able to touch all realities, rob the Griever of worlds and galaxies, and avert the heat death of all creation. This means that at his full potential Pietro would be on par with Wanda, making feats like fighting the Griever less an “outlier” and more a case of him starting to reach said potential.

The Avengers

Originally treated very much as a glass cannon (fast cannon?) in the Avengers, being super fast but not incredibly strong, Pietro has since amassed enough feats that he should be comparable to a number of the Avengers’ heaviest hitters and their most notable showings in base. Namely, his fight with the High Evolutionary, a villain who was portrayed stronger than Rogue and Scarlet Witch and has had the strength to fight the likes of Hercules and the Hulk, more than demonstrates he’s within that relative weight-class of Avenger.

The X-Men

Quicksilver is often treated as one of the most dangerous mutants you can go up against on all the times he has or hasn’t been on the same side as the X-Men. Quite frequently he’s been shown to knock out or choke out Mutants like Cyclops, Angel, Wolverine, and even Magneto. He’s been stated to be able to defeat groups like the Acolytes single-handedly if he truly wanted to, and they were capable of matching X-Factor in a direct brawl. And once, after punching it enough to loosen it, he managed to rip off the Juggernaut's helmet with his bare hands. So we know he can go toe-to-toe with some of the X-Men’s strongest villains, there’s no reason we can’t scale him to a few notable X-Men feats.

Blur

When Phil Coulson rewrote the universe with a Cosmic Cube to create the Heroes Reborn reality, Pietro was one of the many casualties that resulted from the Avengers never forming. However, Scarlet Witch absorbed Quicksilver’s speed upon his death and used it to race Blur, the speedster of this world’s Avengers equivalent, the Squadron Supreme.

Since this race was the result of Scarlet Witch gaining Quicksilver’s speed, it’s only natural for him to scale to Blur.

The Griever at the End of All Things

Despite being able to casually kill the Scarlet Witch, the Griever’s attempt at killing Quicksilver went less successfully. He was able to dodge her attacks, and after building up enough speed during their final battle, he kneed her so hard it shattered her essence across time. Pietro wasn’t operating off of any amps from Wanda either. This was all him after Wanda stalled for enough time for her brother to build up momentum. Thus we can scale Quicksilver at his absolute peak with sufficient speed directly to the Griever.

Original Velocity

Cyberforce

While Velocity’s showings against her teammates are rare in any continuity, as you’ll see below, many of them have fought each other before. Because of this, there’s no reason to assume Carin is somehow exempt from being at a similar level of power.

Aphrodite IX (and other models)

2012’s Velocity has fought her half-sister on two occasions, being able to both harm her, take her hits, and outright being faster than her. She’s also destroyed multiple Aphrodite XVs, which IX had previously demonstrated on her own, and given that IX is meant to be an upgrade over previous Aphrodite models, she should be superior to their feats.

Debatable For Both

Artifact Bearers

Being the Top Cow universe’s resident speedster, it stands to reason that both Velocities would naturally upscale from any non-speedster feat performed by other characters, including the bearers of the legendary 13 Artifacts.

When it comes to Attack Potency, that’s a different story. The original Velocity’s only interactions are the Angelus briefly possessing her, knocking Abby and the Magdalena back with her speed, being grabbed and dropped by Angelus’ current host (Dani), and getting blasted away by the Coin of Solomon. 2012’s Velocity has it a bit better since she actually fights a bearer in the form of Aphrodite IX and uses some herself, but that’s all we get before her death.

This could make it a bit questionable if she should scale, but there are some arguments you can make. However, we must preface that these are a major stretch and require chainscaling. Original Ripclaw was able to briefly fight an early Jackie, who even in those days could fight fellow bearers like Sara Pezzini to a draw and battle an ancient Angelus host. With 2012 Velocity, her fight with Aphrodite IX should naturally let her upscale from the previous Aphrodite models, including IV, who could knock Sara out and blast away her, Tom Judge, and the Angelus. This might sound a bit weird since IV clearly encountered the original Cyberforce team, but the Cyberforce reboot narratively was the side effect of the universal reset in Artifacts. Cyberforce might’ve been the only series to receive a full-on reboot, but everyone else remained the same and there’s still connective tissue between it and other series. Witchblade’s final issue even has Sara encounter the Chairwoman, learn of her association with the Coin of Solomon, and lend her the Witchblade.

These connections also apply to the Witchblade anime since there are official statements that the Witchblade used in the anime is the same as Sara’s, and Top Cow writer/COO Matt Hawkins has said the anime is canon to the comics and takes place in the late 21st century. Seeing how the events of IXth Generation take place in the 2800s (and Matt’s statement coming from a book that bridges the gap between Cyberforce and that series), Velocity should scale to the anime’s feats as well.

Weaknesses

Quicksilver

Quicksilver may be one of the fastest beings in Marvel, but he has a few problems. For starters, he’s a complete dick. The narration has said he’s arrogant, has a volatile temper, impatient, hotheaded and aggressive. He admits to being a failed husband and deadbeat father that comes off as arrogant, quick tempered, and unlikable. Scarlet Witch has called him arrogant, a medically diagnosed sociopath, and blinded by his ego. Wasp says he’s headstrong, and Captain America has noted he’s mentally unstable, arrogant, a mutant chauvinist.

When under high amounts of stress for a long period of time, Pietro can exhaust himself very quickly to where he believes he's aging rapidly and faints after brief usage. Under a stressed mindset, he can only use his powers normally when doing mundane tasks like reading or cooking & eating. This could also explain his varying power level and general progression over the years, once being weaker than Red Skull and otherwise fodder superhumans to now being able to punch out the Griever.

Even without his personal issues, Quicksilver’s speed has a few setbacks to it. Because of how many calories he burns with his speed, he has to eat to keep running, and due to how he exhales a ton of toxins his body produces to avoid fatigue, he can actually be traced by following the path of waste he's exhaled, granted if one has the means of detecting and measuring such toxins. Slower opponents like Goliath and Volt have tagged or dodged him by outguessing his position or studying his fighting style, and he can be stopped by telekinesis, freezing the iron in his blood, freezing him solid, low-friction foam surfaces, psychic walls, non-physical barriers, altering his gravity, and simply being pulled into the air.

He’s also extremely vulnerable to time manipulation. Tempo’s ability to slow down time was able to lower his speed to 10 MPH early in his career (though it strained her to do so), and Immortus has manipulated time to sidestep his attacks and force him to keep running against his will.

Past adventures have shown that his other vulnerabilities include being temporarily blinded by bright lights, having his life force drained, and lacking any inherent mind/illusion manip resistance, with it being stated he’s more vulnerable to psychic attacks compared to someone like Rogue. He’s been tricked before into running into traps, including running into a wall, and lost to Oort, the Living Comet, whose only appearance is… this comic.

Original Velocity

Velocity might be the quickest member of Cyberforce, but she has occasionally run into her fair share of trouble. She has low self esteem, and thanks to her father’s abuse she can be extremely hard on herself when things go wrong.

Because of the implants in her brain, Velocity originally couldn’t go too fast without overloading the chip in her brain, though this became less of an issue as the series went on, partially thanks to her cybernetics improving and her mastering her super speed. However, the chip is still a liability for her. By reaching a certain frequency, it’s still possible to affect it and take control of her movements, though she has overcome this before, albeit by pushing herself to her limits.

She’s also no stranger to brainwashing, having fallen victim to Cyberdata’s SuperSHOC program and has no defenses against mind manipulation.

If she’s not careful while running, she can lose in some embarrassing ways like getting tripped and hitting her head at super speed or running into a palm strike from an assassin android.

And strangely, unlike other speedsters in fiction, she explicitly can’t phase through matter. According to her narration, vibrating your molecules to phase through walls and into other dimensions is bullshit and doesn’t work.

2012 Velocity

Having spent centuries as the only human left on Earth, Velocity is extremely depressed and intends to kill herself once she’s wiped out the rest of the Chairwoman’s legacy. Her showings and powers are also far less impressive than her original counterpart, and despite the Artifacts’ vast array of powers potentially canceling that out, she has never used them to their full extent.

And as you can see above, her metal implants don’t cover her torso.

2018 Velocity

She has so little screen time that her feats can be counted on one hand, and what little we see of her isn’t impressive.

Before the Verdict

Immeasurable Quicksilver?

With how many years Quicksilver’s had the reputation of being a second rate speedster (especially compared to guys like the Flash), it might sound a bit weird that he of all people has arguments for immeasurable speed. Yet, surprisingly, not only do they exist, there are two avenues you can go about for arguing it: one involves the time travel he got from the Terrigen Mists, and the other involves the events of Marvel’s No Surrender storyline.

Terrigen Mist Time Travel

This is the easier of the two to explain. After bathing in the Terrigen Mists in the Son of M miniseries, Quicksilver encounters his future self who explains how they’ve gained the power of time travel. By vibrating his atoms or molecules at a high enough speed, his body will go out of sync with the space-time continuum, allowing him to go into the future.

Since this is being done through speed, specifically by something as precise as controlling his atoms, this would mean Quicksilver using this power should be considered immeasurable speed.

No Surrender

During the events of Avengers: No Surrender, while attempting to help the Avengers out of stasis, Scarlet Witch accidentally transfers it to Pietro, leaving him in critical condition. After recovering, he discovers he can now see strange blue spots, which turns out to be the beacon keeping the Avengers in stasis. Quicksilver chases the beacon across the world, but when he can’t catch it, Scarlet Witch and Synapse help him break through his mental barrier, causing him to go faster than he’s ever gone. He grabs the beacon and moves so fast that he disappears, moving “beyond the limits of speed as we know it” and forcing Scarlet Witch and Doctor Voodoo to enter the dimensions beyond space and time to find him.

On the surface this sounds like it would clearly be a one-time amp, and at first you’d be correct. The first issue of Quicksilver: No Surrender has Pietro describe the events of the story from his perspective and he says Scarlet Witch was using her magic to make him faster. However, the last issue has Quicksilver escape this dimension while racing an evil doppelganger of himself. When he asks the doppelganger how it brought them back to the real world, the doppelganger responds:

We brought us back. You thought it would be your love that saved you? Or your hope? You stupid %$@$&. I'm here because the only thing within you strong enough to break through was your rage. Anger. Impatience. They're who you are, Pietro, they make you strong when you're not whining. They made me.

This doppelganger was from a species of monsters Pietro says are just as fast as himself, and since Quicksilver was able to replicate this level of speed while racing him, Pietro should be Immeasurable. It’s also worth noting even before this and his insane battle with the Griever much later on (more on that in the Verdict), Pietro explicitly moves faster than Phoenix Emma's eye can perceive and members of the Phoenix Five during Avengers vs. X-Men were consistently comparable to Thor, and we all know how fast he is.

Verdict

For this blog, we’re going to be approaching the verdict differently. Instead of breaking it down into the usual Stats, Tertiaries, Arsenal, and Powers, we’ll also be ranking how each version of Velocity fares against Quicksilver from worst to best.

Third Place: 2018 Velocity

To the surprise of nobody, 2018 Velocity is in last place.

Her only appearances were an 11 issue series where she was completely sidelined, so she doesn’t bring much to the table. Her best feats are running at 120 mph, kicking through stone walls, and sending Ripclaw flying with a punch, all of which are extremely basic and outdone by a lowballed Quicksilver!

And just to prove this, let’s analyze Pietro with the bare minimum of his direct feats! The lowest numbers we’re given for his speed are the Civil War guidebooks saying he can reach Mach 2 and has reflexes nearing Mach 1, and he survived a far worse fall than the distance Velocity sent Ripclaw by complete accident! This means a deliberately lowballed Quicksilver is still more durable than 2018’s best hits, has travel speed 12.79 times faster than hers, and can react 6.39 times faster than she can move! And since 2018 Velocity and her armor have almost no durability feats, Quicksilver could just beat her down through brute force, stab her with his sword, dismantle her armor at super speed, cut through it with his buzzsaw, or phase through the armor and her to take them out. Whatever he attacks her with, she won’t have any way of reacting to him in time!

It doesn’t help that he has better uses of super speed like making funnels that suck the air out of people, phasing that would make him untouchable and destroy her body on contact, or actual combat experience! And if you want to be cruel, if Pietro gets the idea to take out her leg implants, she’ll be completely helpless to fight back… assuming he hasn’t already blitzed and one-shot her by that point.

Advantages and Disadvantages:
  • Legitimately has nothing, and on top of it, her reboot sucks
    • It’s like a shitty Netflix adaptation of the original series that took 11 comics to get where the previous series got to in their first issue, and then it got canceled

Second Place: 2012 Velocity

For the silver medal, we had a hard time deciding who should take second and first. Both 2012 and the original had specific advantages over each other comparing them side by side, but after some debate we’re giving second place to 2012 Velocity

Starting with the positives, this Carin is way better off than her successor in terms of stats. Being able to hold her own against Aphrodite IX and outright being faster than her should put 2012’s Velocity at 1.25 megatons from what Aphrodite and a guidebook say about her durability, and upwards of Mach 4.86 in speed. And if you want to argue backscaling to the previous generation of Artifact bearers from Aphrodite IV beating Sara Pezzini unconscious and unleashing a blast that knocked back her and the Angelus, we could potentially bump these stats up to 200 megatons from the Angelus causing the eruption of Krakatoa on her own, 16.08 - 21.249 petatons for spending 28 years in front of a small star, or 36.424 - 54.302 zettatons for creating the Sun Dagger while dying. This would leave Velocity’s Attack Potency anywhere from the low-end of City level to potentially Multi-Continental or Planet level.

She’s also got a better arsenal to go off of, what with her dual knives, metal limbs, the Rapture letting her summon brimstone armor, the Blood Sword being able to increase her strength and create a defensive aura around her, and especially the Wheel of Shadows. Pietro has canonically struggled with time manipulation and non-physical barriers in the past, so Velocity having this sounds like it should be a Quicksilver killer. It lets her speed up or slow down time at a whim to the point of giving herself a speed boost, rapidly age others with touch or an AOE blast that also decays their surroundings, solidify time around herself to create a defensive barrier, and even go back in time, which she has done before while wielding it.

Add in her being over 900 years old and sporting a massive numbers advantage with her army fleet and Hermes androids, and this sounds like she should beat Quicksilver, right? So why’s she only in second place?

Well, when you start to dig a bit deeper, those advantages surprisingly become null.

Since we’re comparing Velocity to her half sister, it’s only fair we compare Quicksilver to his sister, the Scarlet Witch. With the numerous times he’s been able to harm her, blitz her, take her hex blasts, the time he directly contained her, their mom, and Agatha’s combined magic, and having similar full potentials from their status as nexus beings, it’s no question that Pietro should be on par with Wanda. In one of her most infamous moments, Wanda cast the “No More Mutants” spell, which unleashed a Chaos Wave that spread across the entire multiverse and threatening all of creation, reaching all the way up to the White Hot Room. And as we already stated, Pietro directly contained that kind of magic when it was combined with two other witches to help defeat Chaos, a being more powerful than Amatsu-Mikaboshi, who devoured 98% of the Marvel multiverse.

But he doesn’t even need Scarlet Witch scaling to outdo Velocity. Here he is beating down and destroying the High Evolutionary’s armor right after H.E. created a black hole worth over 6 Yottatons of TNT, or over 243 billion times stronger than Velocity’s best scaling! And here he is destroying the Griever with a hit that scatters her essence across time, an abstract entity that is casually universal and can reach multiversal levels from killing Molecule Man

All of that was just their attack potency. Even without reaching his higher ends (see below for that), Quicksilver is more than capable of outspeeding Velocity. Guidebook statements have placed him at up to 31,680 mph (Mach 41.29), but his performances in the comics can reach greater numbers, whether he’s crossing 347 Miles in 3.7 seconds (Mach 440), running halfway across the globe in 92 seconds (Mach 635.3), running multiple laps around Earth, or tying knots in .00003 seconds (Mach 149.59). Whichever you go with, Quicksilver can consistently travel at Hypersonic to Massively Hypersonic speeds and react at those same speeds, so even with her feat of blitzing Aphrodite, Carin is still 8.5 times slower at best and over 130 times slower at worst.

Now in terms of arsenal could be where Velocity takes a hard lead. Both are armed and have historically used melee weaponry, but Quicksilver’s typically require him to use one or both hands while Velocity has her metal limbs and easier to carry dual knives and the Blood Sword, the latter of which actually amps her physical capabilities, making it automatically more beneficial than any of Quicksilver’s melee arsenal (though if we want to be technical, he’d have an edge against all of her blades since he has actual swordsmanship training)

Unlike Quicksilver, Velocity is coming into this fight armored with the Rapture, which doubles as dimensional travel to literal Hell and possibly a means of BFR’ing Quicksilver there (which funnily enough, is how Magik dealt with Quicksilver in Avengers vs. X-Men by trapping him in a portion of Limbo she manifested on Earth). And of course her biggest ace in the hole, the Wheel of Shadows, whose time manipulation is something Quicksilver has historically not done too great against based on fights with time manipulators like Immortus. He doesn’t have any kind of resistance to having his history altered via time travel and it may be possible to catch him at a slower speed and slow him down or reverse his actions. It’s incredibly potent and just might allow her to win… if she ever actually used it.

Yes, you read that correctly. Velocity has never used the Wheel of Shadows- hell, most of these Artifacts -during a fight. The only time she used the Wheel of Shadows was for taking trips to the past where she refused to do anything to change it, and her only uses of the Blood Sword were her swinging it around like a normal sword. She wielded all of these powerful weapons at a time where she was actively trying to kill people, and she only used the stat-amping sword as a basic bitch sword.

But let’s say for the sake of argument she decided to go out of character and used all of these weapons to their full potential. Would it make a difference against Quicksilver?

Even if she did use the Wheel of Shadows on him, Quicksilver still has several ways around it. Not only is his usage of time travel with the Terrigen Mists a viable counter to The Wheel’s, but his limit breaking speed in No Surrender shows that he could outright phase through time manipulation and become unstuck from time itself. And unlike Velocity, Quicksilver actually learned to use his time powers and used them in fights.

Not to mention, Quicksilver still has the better speed feats and would blitz her before she uses it. From there he could break down her metal armor, steal her weapons, and/or destroy them, all of which are things he’s done in the past.

And while it’s true that Velocity is the oldest one here since she’s been alive for over 900 years, it’s important to note most of that time was spent watching over people in stasis, not participating in combat.

Okay, well, what about her numbers advantage? That should keep Pietro on his toes for a bit!

Technically, yes, but they’d be more of a minor distraction if anything. While we don’t have an exact number for how many Hermes androids or ships have joined Velocity, the androids have zero notable feats of their own, and even if you scale their speed to Aphrodite, Quicksilver’s still fast enough to blitz them before they could even fire at him!

And for as enormous as the fleet of airships is, they aren’t that useful in practice. The reason Velocity deployed these ships in canon was to tear down Aphrodite IX’s kingdom and all of her subjects. Those ships were spread across a massive city without a specific target, and while they’d only be focusing on one man here, there’s a major issue: the airships don’t seem to have any ranged attacks.

From what we see of their assault on New Cythera, the ships only seem capable of ramming into things, and with their flight speed being completely undefined, it’s unlikely Quicksilver would be in any danger. We’re talking about a guy that can casually run laps around Earth. Even if Velocity ordered all of her ships to crash into him at once, he’d be well out of range by the time they reached the ground… assuming he doesn’t just phase through them or deploy Lockjaw to teleport him out of harm’s way. Keep in mind this is assuming Velocity would resort to this strategy at all. Looking back to her invasion, it’s clear she prefers to go into battle herself and fight at ground level. So the more likely outcome here is she’ll have an entire fleet of airships watch Pietro beat the brakes off her.

Speaking of Lockjaw, our best boy’s powers have let him go toe-to-toe with some of Marvel’s strongest like the Thing or Silver Surfer. As Pietro’s sole support in this debate, he’s so ridiculously versatile that there isn’t a lot in Velocity’s arsenal nor her own supports that Lockjaw doesn’t counter alone. Giant airfleet and android army? He can solo that. Rapture or Wheel of Shadows? Well Lockjaw can teleport in and out of alternate dimensions, timelines, and even a Nexus of All Realities, a space existing between and outside of timelines altogether. Even limiting him to scaling to just Quicksilver’s earliest showings based on being able to react to him, that would put Lockjaw at double to triple digit Mach speeds, which exceed this Velocity's showings.

Advantages:
  • Has the larger, haxxier arsenal compared to Pietro…
  • Massive numbers advantage…

Disadvantages:
  • …But she hasn’t used most of those hax herself, and she’s canonically reluctant to use her best one, time travel, at all
  • …which Pietro can easily blitz, avoid, or destroy with his speed and Lockjaw
  • Is completely demolished in stats even with her best scaling and Pietro’s more casual stuff, to say nothing of his multiversal scaling
  • Her reboot also sucks and suffers from 2010s dark, gritty reboot cliches, but at least we got Aphrodite IX and IXth Generation out of it

First Place: Original Velocity

Finally, in first place, we have the Velocity from the original Top Cow universe. Like we said before, it was hard to call which Velocity should rank where, but we’re giving the original the gold medal for three reasons: having the closest stats, powers, and experience… at least compared to her other selves.

Experience

As we explained before in Venom vs Jackie, Marvel operates under a sliding timescale where everything since the Fantastic Four’s founding takes place in the span of under 15 years. This is clearly not the case for Top Cow’s universe since the end of Witchblade and supplementaryguidebooks establish that this verse progresses more or less in real time. Thus, since Cyberforce as a series began in October, 1992 and the original Top Cow universe ended with Artifacts #12 in December, 2011, Velocity would have roughly 19 years of experience give or take. Unfortunately, while this means she outclasses him in total experience, Quicksilver’s over 6 decades of publishing history more than make up for it. He’s learned military tactics and strategy, has experience fighting in wars without his powers, and most importantly, has actual combat training where Velocity only had basic self defense trainingin her short time with Cyberdata’s SHOCs.

I guess if you want to be technical you could say that Velocity’s got more practice in turning mundane items into weapons, but that’s not going to do much good when Quicksilver’s relied on that same strategy in the past, has actual weapons, and with how badly he demolishes her in stats.

Stats

When it comes to direct feats, this Velocity is not only the best in terms of visuals, but raw numbers. Speed-wise, she can casually hit Mach 7 and 10,000 mph (Mach 13.03), and at her best she created a global sonic boom while outrunning a radio wave, which would put her at 97.91 teratons of TNT and faster than light. Since her body was durable enough to survive this, that would also make her the most durable of the Velocities, and that’s without mentioning her kevlar skin. Whether it’s embedded in her skin, underneath it, or merged with it at the molecular level, it’s a level of protection that none of her counterparts have an equivalent to, even without the massive numbers gap.

So original Velocity is the fastest of her three selves and the most durable… but that still isn’t enough to catch up to Pietro. Those lower end feats are completely beaten out by what we already covered in 2012’s section, with the Mach 635.3 feat making him nearly 49 times faster than Velocity’s second best speed feat!

Credit where it’s due, outrunning a radio wave would put Velocity on par with some of Quicksilver’s higher showings, but this isn’t something she can pop out whenever she wants. This required pushing herself past her mental limits and left her reeling from a massive migraine, and it’s something she only accomplished once.

Even if she could get into the headspace to replicate it, not only has Quicksilver also outrun radio waves at a more casual pace, he has more consistent feats in the FTL range. He outran a mini black hole and Ringmaster’s hypnotic light before it could reach him, outspeed Monica Rambeau while she was flying at lightspeed, ran fast enough that robots mistook him for light, and has shown reactions and travel speed in the picosecond range. Even without that, absorbing his speedallowed Scarlet Witch to race a speedster who can run faster than light, so all of this combined would make him consistently FTL, nearly 5x FTL, or thousands of times FTL

All of this is without bringing up how Quicksilver could upscale from feats that are more impressive than his. Where Velocity’s best scaling comes from Jackie flying past the Karman line in under a minute at Mach 27.33, Quicksilver would scale to Magneto harnessing magnetic waves to fly from a planet in another galaxyto Earth in a short time-frame or Thor traveling to another universe in the time it took someone to pray and throwing Mjolnir hard enough that it transcends the boundaries of space and time. These would put Quicksilver above 22.224 billion times FTL, 9.275 quintillion times FTL, or Immeasurable.

And if we want to talk about comparing their speeds after breaking their limits? We have outrunning a radio wave vs an unlocked Quicksilvermoving beyond the limits of speed and the bounds of physical reality, becoming unstuck from time itself, and unlike Velocity, he replicated this feat on his own! He’s even gotten to the point where he mocks Abstracts like the Griever for being slow, with the Griever being able to match and defeat the Silver Surfer in a head on duel. The same Surfer who can exceed light-speed and time travel via sheer speed and travel to dimensions beyond the multiverse such as Overspace. The same Surfer that Pietro states he has exceeded in speed after losing his mental blocks. This means at their best, Velocity is FTL and Quicksilver is Immeasurable!

Well, what about her scaling? Like 2012’s Velocity, the classic version also has scaling to Artifact bearers from getting blasted by the Coin of Solomon and Ripclaw’s fight with an early Jackie. This would leave her with the same maximum AP as her reboot self, but with WAAAAAAAY better speed and durability. Not that it matters against Quicksilver since we already went over how he dominates 2012’s Artifact scaling, but still.

Arsenal

While 2012 Velocity certainly had some potent equipment like the Wheel or Rapture, classic Velocity just has Jett for the most part. While she might be able to do information gathering mid-fight through it, Quicksilver’s melee heavy arsenal is going to be giving her a lot to look out for. At any given time he could be carrying energy rifles, power gauntlets, grenades, a sword, and a buzzsaw that can cut machinery made by an Abstract. Even if these weapons aren’t particularly special, in conjunction with his greater training and literal war-time experience with some of these pieces of equipment, it’s very much an advantage that Quicksilver can keep Velocity out of arms reach in a close-quarters encounter. And this is all compounded with Lockjaw, who makes this a 2v1 fight in Pietro’s favor.

Powers

Since we’ve already covered their super speed in the stats section, here we’ll compare their applications of it. With enough speed, both can vibrate their bodies and create vortexes by spinning their arms or running around people. The difference is that Quicksilver’s got way better showings of both. His vortexes can generate air cushions to soften impacts lift enemies into the air, and choke them, be used as a barrier, and shred enemy armor, whereas Velocity’s have only knocked people into the air and suffocated them.

There’s also the numerous other ways that Pietro has weaponized his speed mid-fight. He’s run fast enough to create a sonic boom, done the same with a snap, projected lightning by running, built up enough momentum to ricochet around his surroundings and barrel into enemies… Velocity was far more limited in comparison.

And she’s just as limited when comparing their phasing. Phasing through solid matter is something she explicitly can’t do, whereas Quicksilver has phased through matter multiple times and somehow used it to fly. In terms of offensive capabilities, we’ve got Carin setting someone on fire when he grabs her (something Pietro has tanked in the past) vs him destroying whatever he phases through and exploding objects by touch. Velocity doesn’t have any hope against that, especially with how frequently he’s done it in recent comics.

Pietro’s enhanced senses also give him a heads up on Velocity trying to pull any tricks against him. His senses have been portrayed almost as a sort of danger sense, being able to pick up things other Mutants with enhanced senses couldn't detect and letting him perceive things outside the visible spectrum of light. And on top of that, he’s somehow able to make himself invisible to people faster than him through nothing else but his speed mutation. That literally doesn’t make any sense, but Pietro somehow did it nonetheless. With all this compounded there’s very little room to argue that Velocity might be able to catch him off-guard or surprise him in a serious battle, even if she were to use her Ultra-Sapien powers (which make so little of a difference we didn’t bring them up).

And while this one’s only applicable if we give Pietro his Terrigen powers, this Velocity would have a unique vulnerability to them. Unlike her counterparts, the original is stated to be a mutant with super speed, meaning that Pietro’s Terrigen touch could end up overloading her powers to devastating effects. And since she still has powers, this touch would also induce rapid cellular decay that would knock her out for hours and eventually kill her. So it’s entirely possible Pietro could win just by touching her.

In short, the original Velocity would do the best against Quicksilver, but this is still a massive stomp in Pietro’s favor.

Advantages:
  • Active for much longer since her verse doesn’t have a sliding timescale…
  • Has way better speed and durability compared to her 2012 self…
  • Is the closest to matching Quicksilver’s speed by breaking her limits…

Disadvantages:
  • …though Quicksilver makes up for this with better experience and training
  • …but Quicksilver still has a massive edge in stats
  • …but Quicksilver has more consistent FTL-MFTL feats and scaling, and his own limit break makes him immeasurable
  • None of her versions have adaptations and they become more obscure as we go along

Conclusion

Quicksilver

Advantages:

Disadvantages:
We went into this expecting something a bit closer than it was, but we came out of it looking at one of our biggest stomps since Venom vs Jackie. Pretty appropriate considering this is another Marvel vs Top Cow blog.

To be fair, this isn’t as big of a stomp as that was. At least here the Top Cow character has something that could put down the Marvel character… but her best hax are things other users have done that she hasn’t, or they’re things she canonically refuses to use offensively. And even if she did, Quicksilver has plenty of counters to both, whether he blitzes her and steals/destroys her weapons or moves out of their range with teleportation or sheer speed.

And that’s just 2012 Velocity. 2018 Velocity is probably one of the weakest speedsters in fiction, and while the original Velocity is the closest to matching Pietro in stats, he’s still well beyond her and she’s completely lacking in hax.

So while Velocity may have been a powerful speedster in her own right, Quicksilver just has everything he needs to end this fight in a Flash... Oh damn it! Let’s rewind that…

So while Velocity may have been a powerful speedster in her own right, Quicksilver just had everything he needed and then some to put a stop to her momentum.

The winner is Quicksilver.
