Talim vs Nakoruru (Soulcalibur vs Samurai Shodown)
(Br3ndan5)
(Scarat)
Talim, Soulcalibur’s Last Priestess of the Winds.
Nakoruru, Samurai Shodown’s Guardian of Mother Nature.
Nakoruru, Samurai Shodown’s Guardian of Mother Nature.
The world is a cruel and violent place, even more so in a setting where the mightiest of evils possess earth-shaping dark power, and those who follow in their wake strive for the very same. In such a world, is it not then, the truest of power, to be pure-hearted? Facing down the darkest sources of power at any cost to one’s self, for the preservation of life, and nature.
Among the expansive world of fighting games, few people exemplify that innocence and purity more than these two priestesses. But when there is no chance of mercy, which of these demure maidens will survive to see another day after a DEATH BATTLE!
Background
Talim
"I will follow the wind, whatever it may go."
Among the people of the modern day Philippines, there exists a village, simply called the Village of the Wind Deity. Rich in tradition and mystic ways, the faith in this Deity was gradually waning, to the point where when Talim was born, daughter to the village Shaman, she was regarded as the “Last Priestess of the Winds”. Trained by her father and her cousin Plata, Talim was molded from her first breaths to be everything that a Priestess of the Winds could be.
The world of Soulcalibur is one of pervasive darkness, cloying corruption, and abyssal gouges in reality, threatening to plunge it into madness and destruction. Soul Edge and Soul Calibur wage a constant war, with the whole map as their battlefield. Warriors the world over swarm to the blades like moths to flame, whether seeking the power of Soul Edge, or Soul Calibur’s capabilities to fight against its counterpart. But in the end, this makes both blades a gathering ground for slaughter, ever the more apparent in how Soul Calibur is a part of Soul Edge perpetuating its own cycle. Truly, a tale of souls and swords, eternally retold.
This makes Talim a radiant bulwark against the dark in contrast to the vast majority of the cast. She seeks neither sword, and wants no power but what she already holds in herself. After all her training and learning as a priestess, she sought to remove the threat of these cursed blades from the world, not just to cease the pain they cause, but also the pain of those who seek them. Her kindness and pure nature makes her shine all the brighter among the more violent fighters along her way. To that end, Talim is willing to fight, but when all is said and done, even with both Soul Edge and Soul Calibur cast to her feet, she rejected both, and chose forgiveness and clemency, even to a man who held the guilt of millenia of torment to the world for the creation of the blades everyone sought. Giving relief from pain, guidance to one’s soul, and permission to let go of one’s burdens, Talim embodies what it means to be a Priestess.
Nakoruru
"Whoever defiles the nature shall feel my wrath!"
Centuries ago in Ezochi, Japan, there was a village hidden in the forests and mountains. Known for its inhabitants’ deep connections to nature, the village of Kamui Kotan was protected by the high priests of the Ainu deity Kamui. But soon war fell upon the country, and the village protector ventured out to defend his home from the oncoming threat. His efforts would only lead to his death, and upon learning of his fate his eldest daughter Nakoruru would follow in his footsteps.
With her father’s sword and her pet falcon Mamahaha at her side, Nakoruru traveled the land and eventually encountered the man responsible for his death: the warlord Gaoh. After a hard fought battle, Nakoruru came out victorious and was visited by the Ainu’s patron deity Kamui, who coerced her to succeed her father as the village guardian.
She’d soon become integrated into her new role thanks to the various threats to nature that soon rose up. However, her fate would take a drastic turn in the battle against the vengeful spirit Mizuki Rashojin. Though she managed to stop Mizuki from devastating the land, the imbalance caused by her presence necessitated a sacrifice to balance things out. With no other choice, Nakoruru gathered her energy and dispelled the global disasters at the cost of her own life…
Or so it seemed. Later games would retcon that instead of sacrificing herself, she survived but was forced to sleep until she was needed again. After assisting in the defeat of Yuga the Destroyer, Nakoruru’s spirit ascended and merged to become one with nature itself. Though she may have lost her physical form, the Divine Spirit would continue to serve her role by transcending time, using her powers to aid in preventing natural and supernatural disasters. Whether she’s human, an immortal spirit, or a small sprite, Nakoruru’s empathy for nature shines through. No matter what she faces, this Ainu priestess will see that whoever defiles the Earth shall face nature’s wrath!
Experience, Intelligence, and Skill
Talim
Given her extremely focused upbringing, largely directed towards the duties she would have as a Priestess, Talim lacks very much intelligence about matters outside of her purview, and her pure innocence can come off more as naivety as well. Though she is considered powerful enough to be a reincarnation of ancient priestesses, her youth makes her very inexperienced, and though she still has over a decade of experience with her weapons and powers, quite little of it is in actual life or death struggles.Nakoruru
Having become the Warrior of Kamui Kotan at 15, Nakoruru has spent her time training to battle anyone who threatens nature. She is considered the greatest warrior in her tribe, and even before becoming Kamui Koran’s warrior, her combative abilities impressed the warlord Gaoh. During her quest to stop Amakusa, she killed a ton of people (20:02-20:53)Though her ascension into a Divine Spirit prevents her from being as active as she once was, she will still emerge during times of crisis, even as far as the modern day.
In the RPG spin-off, Nakoruru fights a wide variety of enemies, including mermaids, zombies, sorcerers, giant octopi, and Amakusa and his demonically empowered generals.
Equipment
Talim
Syi Salika & Loka Luha
A set of Elbow Blades used in Ritual dances by Talim’s tribe. Despite being ceremonial, the blades are exceptionally sharp, and Talim has used them from a very young age. When one with a pure heart such as Talim wields them, they receive the wind’s blessing.
Wind Guide
Another set of ritual Elbow Blades, this one specifically used in a dance once per year to welcome the wind that circles the earth. These weapons are excellent at piercing guards, and in gameplay terms, 40% of the damage from a blocked attack gets through.
Side Harpe
Originally belonging to a collector of rare swords, these weapons are dulled in power, weaker than most of Talim’s arsenal, but boast surprising defenses. It allows Talim to almost preternaturally guard impact some (10%) of attacks, parrying and negating them. In addition, guard impacting attacks cuts at the enemy, damaging them.
Double Crescent Blade
Somewhat heavier blades, leading to solid defense and offense, at the cost of being among the shortest of Talim’s weapons. The curved edges of the weapon actually allow Talim to avoid being tossed off ledges, catching onto the ledge and continuing the fight (mechanically 60% of the time). They also resonate with Talim’s Soul Charge, making her stronger and slower during it.
Cao Ankana
A pair of ritual Elbow Blades made for appeasing out of season typhoons. Don’t be fooled though, only the one on the right is from the Cao Ankana set. The other is currently buried as part of that ritual. Massive as it is, it’s by far Talim’s largest weapon, but that comes with draining her health by a tiny bit per second. At least it damages through guards! (30% mechanically)
Ocarina
A joke weapon that is actually a musical instrument. As such, naturally has poor attack and defense, but gives Talim a high chance of breaking out of grapples. Somehow.
Mabilis
A more ancient weapon from Talim’s tribe, it bears the name of a god and is Talim’s strongest ritual weapon. These two blades are used in a special sword dance that represents storms and tornadoes, embodying the destruction and aggression wind can possess. Dancing with these weapons also allows Talim to achieve harmony with the Spirit world.
Nakoruru
Chichi-Ushi
Translating to “Father Bull”, the Chichi-Ushi is Nakoruru’s prized sword which was originally owned by her Father. Unbeknownst to her, the sword’s full power is sealed off, but she can unleash its full potential by singing the Shrine Maiden’s Song.
Cloak
Nakoruru can use this to smack her enemies and reflect projectiles.
Mamahaha
A loyal pet hawk that aids Nakoruru in combat and can actively communicate with her. She can dive toward enemies, drag them through the air, create tornados by flapping her wings, or be ridden by Nakoruru to fly, attack from the air, and become harder to hit.
Shikuru
While not as consistent of a partner as Mamahaha, this wolf has occasionally aided Nakoruru. She can ride him during battle, allowing for better speed and mobility, and he can charge into enemies and throw Nakoruru into them for added damage.
Flute
Shown in the Samurai Spirits (ISHIKAWA KEN) manga. This flute doesn't actually play music, instead it sends out ultrasonic waves that can summon a horde of birds onto the enemy. It has only been shown to be used on birds and not on any other animal.

Abilities
Talim
Sword Dance
Sword Dance is a ritual of worship in Talim’s village. It doubles as a fighting style for her to use, as well as magic casting of aeromancy. She can extend the range of her melee blows with wind, hover in midair or use wind to break her falls, create directional whirlwinds to push enemies or throw them into the air, and all of her winds are sharp, able to cut enemies like blades. Her healing winds can also surround her with healing energy, and cure her wounds.
Magic of a Priestess of the Winds
Talim can sense the winds, reading them in a form of clairvoyance and prophecy. While not necessarily combat precognition, she can see wider scale events, people, and objects of importance. This power allows her to see through magical disguises like those used by vampires. She’s also capable of perceiving and striking spirits, such as a Will’o’the’wisp that’s made up of flames.
Banishment/Sealing
Talim has the power to use the winds to seal away or banish objects. While it is an Arcade mode ending, and thus not the true canon, Talim used this power to get rid of even something on the scale of Soul Edge itself.
Spirit Summoning
One of Talim’s most unexplained abilities. When facing down Algol, she summoned the spirit of his deceased son, making Algol; a living man, pass on. It’s unclear how she knew of this spirit when she couldn’t have possibly known about him prior, but hey. She’s done it.
Corruption Negation
Talim has the ability to take those who have been corrupted by Soul Edge and purge them of their corruption. She’s used it to cure a boy who became infected from merely touching a shard of the unholy sword.
Nakoruru
Spirit Physiology and Avatar Creation
After sacrificing herself, Nakoruru’s soul remained in the physical world, and she can create avatars to temporarily interact with it. These avatars are usually extremely tiny and invisible to the naked eye, but they can still be sensed by others.
Extrasensory Perception
Nakoruru is so in tune with nature that she can actively communicate with it. This allows her to sense the presence of others, their emotional state, and any possible threats to nature. She’s used this to sense stealth-based enemies, Shizumaru’s hidden bloodlust, Amakusa’s resurrection, Yuga’s influence over Shiki, Verse’s influence over Iori, the presence of disturbed spirits and demons, and Shizuka Gozen’s essence in her drum. It’s also been used to let her discover when the seasons will begin and accurately predict the weather. (11:00, 12:26-12:34)
Non-Physical Interaction
Severed Verse’s invisible, intangible strings to free Iori from his control.
Ghost Summoning
In King of Fighters: A New Beginning, Nakoruru summons numerous ghosts to fight Verse’s disembodied souls. These ghosts include Haohmaru, Rimururu, Ukyo, Genjuro, Charlotte, Hanzo Hattori, Galford, and Poppy, with each one having the same abilities as they did in life.
Time Travel
Upon becoming a Divine Spirit, Nakoruru gained the ability to transcend time and travel to other eras. She typically uses this to avoid disasters and find assistance in other times, though she’s never used it in combat.
Shrine Maiden’s Song
A melody passed down through the different generations of shrine maidens that was taught to her by her mother. By singing it, the full power of the shrine maiden is awakened within her and Chichi-ushi is imbued with the strength of all spirits, allowing her to slay any evil. However, Nakoruru never used this herself and instead taught it to Mikato in her dying moments.Reincarnation
In Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture, Nakoruru and the other Holy Warriors of Light will reincarnate during times of great evil (6:39-6:49), though it can take up to 100 years. Upon reincarnating, they usually retain memories of their past lives, and if not they can be reawakened by reuniting with their former comrades.Resistances
Talim
Mental Manipulation, Soul Manipulation, Biological Manipulation, and Corruption:Resists Soul Edge, which can brainwash people into picking it up, absorb souls, and corrupt those it touches into deformed monsters called Malfested.
Nakoruru
Nothing.Movesets
Talim
Soul Charge
Summoning the force of wind, Talim knocks away nearby enemies and surrounds her weapons with energy. Her attacks deal damage through the opponent's guards, and she gains access to more powerful versions of her attacks, and her overall damage is increased. This lasts about ten seconds.
Resist Impact
A parry that launches away even some of Soulcalibur’s most unblockable blows. Needs to be timed incredibly well, and doing so restores some of Talim’s own guard meter.
Wind Charmer
One of Talim’s three bread and butter Wind Evasions. She pivots quickly around the enemy, ideal for dodging vertical slashes. Leads into several attacks, including quick jabs that again combo back into any of the Wind Evasions.
Wind Sault
Another of Talim’s three Wind Evasions. She performs a front flip to close distance, get over enemies outright and get behind them, or leap over horizontal sweeping attacks. Can lead into several generic slashes, but can also Layout to kick off the opponent into a second Wind Sault.
Wind Fury
The last of Talim’s three Wind Evasions. Twirling away from the opponent, she crouches and puts her elbow blades above her head, summoning the winds around herself. While she stays in this stance, she restores her stability and stamina, but notably also allows her to perform some of her strongest non-soul charged attacks.
Wind Bearer
A status Talim can grant herself that enhances the size of some of her attacks with wind, making them heal her. Her weapons become surrounded by wind. It can be obtained by holding Wind Fury for a few seconds, parrying attacks with Wind Fury, Soul Charging, dodging after a Reversal Clash counter or using a critical edge.
Panay Hurricane
Talim strikes forward and releases a compressed funnel of wind that blasts opponents away. Restores Talim’s stamina on a successful hit. If the initial thrust of this attack breaks an opponent’s guard, the wind destroys their armor or equipment and does more damage.
Raging Wind
Talim just digs deep and punches the opponent with her flaming blade. An unblockable attack in the context of Soulcalibur
Cloud Seeker
A swift but powerful horizontal slash that spins the enemy, and combos well into any of her three Wind Evasions.
Swirling Current
A pair of vertical cuts with the latter sending the opponent overhead behind her.
Eddy Sipa
A sideways dodge leading right into a straight kick that knocks enemies down.
Weather Vane Buster
A quartet of shots right for the head with her elbow blades with wide sweeping motions, ending with Talim facing away from the enemy.
Rapid Espada
A variation on Weather Vane Buster, mixing in a mid-height thrust with both blades. Can be combo’d into any of the three Wind Evasions.
Swift Espada
Two attacks to disorient the enemy before she leaps over their heads and drives her elbow blades down, launching the enemy behind her between her legs.
Wind Dance
A leaping spin that strikes high, feinting out a second strike for the head while landing.
Mirror Fan Strikes
An advancing pair of powerful swings that knock down opponents on the second strike. Can be combo’d into any of the three Wind Evasions.
Wind Walker
A variation that uses the first strike of the Mirror Fan Strikes, but instead comes up with a quick vertical spin of her elbow blade that breaks through guards.
Razor Storm
Talim turns away from the opponent and crouches down, swinging her blades behind her like buzz saws. Great for pressing the offense while getting under high attacks from enemies.
Spinning Low Hiwa
A spinning horizontal attack great for whacking an opponent’s shins as they guard high.
Ice Wind Combo
While facing away from an opponent, Talim turns back in, spinning both her elbow blades like buzz saws. She swings three times, alternating sides, with each swing counting for three hits.
Kampilan Flurry
A pair of vertical slashes up and down, ending with Talim preparing a counter-stance. The stance can be canceled out of with any of Talim’s three Wind Evasions.
Air Blade Thrust
A vertical blow that leads into a stab at chest level. The second attack can be held and charged, making it crush defenses more effectively. Charged or not, it can combo into any of Talim’s three Wind Evasions.
Cross Breeze
Talim slashes downwards, then turns away and does a backflip, kicking the opponent and landing facing away from the enemy.
West Wind Combo
Talim performs an uppercut while spinning her elbow blade, slashing the opponent repeatedly.
Blue Sky
A powerful uppercut that launches the opponent skyward. Can be held to delay the uppercut and fake out enemies. If this connects while the opponent is attempting to parry, it destroys their armor or equipment and does more damage.
Whirlwind Hambalos
Talim charges her blades and spins them while crouching backwards, making them catch fire as she then leaps and slashes downwards. Goes through guards like paper and is unblockable. Can be canceled into a Wind Sault in case the opponent rushes in.
Rising Baraw
While Talim crouches, she rises with two strong hits that launch opponents into the air. Can be combo’d into any of the three Wind Evasions, especially the Wind Sault, where it can land attacks on the opponent as they fall.
High/Side/Low Sipa
A turning boot to the head, torso, or legs. Plain and simple.
Sipa Trip
A spinning kick that disrupts the opponent’s stance.
Diving Wind Sipa
Talim does a tucked in front flip while facing away from the opponent, driving her heels up into their face.
Ice Wind
Talim charges back and generates electricity on her blade, delivering a strong vertical slash that crushes guards. If the opponent is trying to counter the attack, it destroys their armor or equipment and does more damage.
Sudden Storm
Talim leaps towards her opponent while facing away, before using a Razor Storm. If delayed a moment, it crushes through guards. If she leaps towards the opponent twice, the move becomes unblockable and burns the target.
Flowing Gale Hook
Talim sprints in and slashes twice for the head. Can combo into any of the three Wind Evasions. While Wind Bearer is active, the attack becomes Flowing Gale Hook: Mabilis, and is larger, and landing the attack heals Talim.
Blade Cyclone
Talim does a quick sidestep, then a fast spin that cuts opponents twice. Can combo into any of the three Wind Evasions. While Wind Bearer is active, it becomes Blade Cyclone: Mabilis, where again, it is larger, and heals Talim.
Paayon Thrust
A running and leaping thrust of her blade, and during Wind Bearer becomes Paayon Thrust: Mabilis. While it doesn’t make the attack any bigger, it does heal her. If this attack lands while the opponent is backing away from her, it destroys their armor or equipment and does more damage.
Tumbling Razors
A cartwheel kicking the opponent twice, then bringing her blades down on them while closing the gap.
Sipa Slide
A sprinting slidekick that trips enemies to the ground. If Talim has low health, becomes Was Sipa Slide, and she faceplants to trip the enemy instead.
Tagga Na Kamay
Talim grabs the opponent’s leg and pulls them a few feet to break their stance, then delivers two slashes across the face with both blades, knocking them onto their backs.
Monsoon
Talim hops up onto the opponent’s arm and twists around, forcing them to the ground. She then sits on their chest, slashing down into the opponent’s head with both elbow blades.
Tower Sipa
Talim grabs the opponent’s shoulders from the left side, leaping up to almost handstand on their shoulders, before swinging back down and taking them out at the ankles.
Piggyback Tulison
Grabbing the opponent from the right, she tosses them onto hands and knees, hopping onto their back and slashing at their ass twice before hitting it HARDER and sending them sprawling. Definitely one of her silliest moves.
Diving Wind Sipa Throw
Grabbing the opponent from behind, Talim tosses them onto hands and knees again, but leaves them their dignity this time as she simply hops over them, curling up and driving her feet into the opponent’s side to launch them.
Sungabb Throw
While Talim is facing away, she grabs the opponent’s shoulder and just… Dislocates that sucker, while dragging the opponent in a circle by it, before tossing them over herself by the arm. Sounds crunchy.
Monsoon Season
Puts her throws together as she gets the opponent to the ground with her legs around their shoulder to dislocate. Again, crunchy. She then gets onto the opponent’s chest and punches them twice in the face before slashing across their head.
Typhoon Mabilis
Talim spins and creates a small tornado that repeatedly cuts the enemy while pulling them into place. This also activates Talim’s Soul Charge without knocking the enemy away, making it able to combo without disrupting her offensive flow.
Rapid Gale Barrage
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. Talim performs a series of two high slashes, and two for the torso, with the latter breaking through guards outright. Can be combo’d into Wind Fury.
Kampilan Witik Sweep
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. A rapid series of five strikes with both blades and feet, starting in the middle for one, a high kick, and three low strikes, tripping the foe.
Howling Winds
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. Four hits in rapid succession that culminate in knocking the opponent high airborne. Great for setting up for other attacks to hit on landing.
Tornado Assault Kamay
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. An absolute cluster of blows, with two wind enhanced strikes, followed by four cuts from her spinning her elbow blades, ending with a downright Shoryuken motion that breaks guards if the guard has held up through all that. Launches enemies back.
Changing Winds
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. Talim gives a sprinting thrust strike with her Elbow blade that crushes through guards and stuns, then she performs a launching uppercut that knocks away enemies. If this attack lands while the opponent is backing away from her, it destroys their armor or equipment and does more damage.
Tempest Assault
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. Following a dodge with Wind Charmer, swarms the enemy with five hits, the last one launching enemies. Excellent for capitalizing on dodging an enemy attack.
Arctic Winds
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. Also following a dodge with Wind Charmer, Talim mixes high and low attacks, making her possibly get under high blows, before spinning like a little razor blender, knocking enemies down.
Light Breeze
Only able to be performed while Soul Charged. During the front flip of Wind Sault, Talim slashes downwards with both blades, shattering through guards. Can combo into Wind Fury.
Wind of Bliss
Her Critical Finish in SC4. A series of vertical spinning slashes, disorienting the enemy before Talim generates wind and blasts them into the air. She lets gravity do the rest, and gives the opponent a nasty fall.
Dancing Tempest
Her Critical Edge in SC6. A flurry of wind enhanced physical slashes, with Talim uppercutting the opponent with a small tornado, leaping up, and blowing them back into the ground with another. As Talim lands on lofty winds, she heals herself.
Nakoruru
Rage Gauge
An energy that builds up over time whenever Nakoruru takes damage or charges her energy manually with Rage Build. When completely filled, Nakoruru enters a state called Max Rage, which turns her skin red, temporarily boosts her strength, enhances the damage of her special attacks, and lets her use Elelyu Kamui Rimuse.
Rage Explosion
A one-use “super mode” that Nakoruru can access at any time she has rage. Upon activating, an explosion knocks her enemies back, and time is completely stopped. During this period, Nakoruru gains access to moves like Issen and Elelyu Kamui Rimuse.
The form’s duration is dependent on how much rage she has, so more rage means more power.
Concentration One
Also called Circumstance of Nothing, State of Nothingness, or Way of Nothingness, this allows Nakoruru to briefly slow time by meditating. While active, each of her attacks will leave the opponent stunned and unable to guard, and knocking them in the air allows her to juggle them. The only way it ends is if Nakoruru is hit by an attack. While this may sound useful, it comes at a few costs. It can only be done once, and when it ends, Nakoruru will lose access to the Rage Gauge for the rest of the round.
Dodge
Self-explanatory.Sword Stun
Nakoruru blocks against an attack and deflects it by pushing back, leaving her enemy vulnerable to a counterattack.Stance Break
A follow-up to Sword Stun where Nakoruru sends her opponent flying with a double palm strike.Counter
Nakoruru counters an opponent’s attack with an upward slash, knocking their weapons from their hands.Blade Catch
If Nakoruru is disarmed during battle, she can catch her opponent’s blade and disarm them with a double palm strike that sends them flying.Annu Mutsube
Nakoruru charges forward and delivers a ki-enhanced slash. It’s a useful counter against blocked or missed attacks and makes for good combo filler.
Rera Mutsube
A version of Annu Mutsube where Nakouru leaps through the air at a diagonal angle and delivers a ki-enhanced slash.
Kamui Rimuse
Nakoruru swings her cloak through the air, which can be used as a close range attack or reflect projectiles.
Kamui Rimuse Return
A follow-up to Kamui Rimurse where Nakoruru delivers an upward swing to knock the opponent back.
Chitenzan
Nakoruru spins through the air with her blade outstretched like a buzzsaw.
Amube Yatoro
Nakoruru directs Mamahaha to dive toward her opponent. While charging, Mamahaha will cancel out projectiles, but after reaching a certain point she’ll return to Nakoruru. During this time, Mamahaha won’t be able to attack.
This move has three variations: a light attack where Mamahaha hits just in front of Nakoruru, a medium version that travels up to half the stage, and a heavy version that travels across almost the entire stage.
Rerashu
Mamahaha fires a tornado at a downward, diagonal angle. If it hits the opponent, the tornado will suddenly grow and drag its target into the air.
Shichikapu Ai
Mamahaha dives toward her foe and knocks them down.
Shichipaku Etu
A variant of the above where Mamahaha dives toward the opponent and drags them into the air.
Mamahaha Flight
Nakoruru grabs onto Mamahaha’s talons and takes to the air. While clinging to Mamahaha, Nakoruru can briefly hover, deliver slash attacks, allow herself to drop, or follow up with one of these attacks:
- Yatoro Poku: Nakoruru releases her grip on Mamahaha and performs a spinning slash.
- Kamuyhum Kesupu: Nakoruru drops from Mamahaha and performs a spin kick.
- Kamui Mutsube: Nakoruru lets go of Mamahaha and dives down at a diagonal angle, hitting her opponent with a ki-enhanced slash.
Oogami ni Matagura
Nakoruru leaps onto Shikuru, giving her access to additional attacks.Shikuru Kara Oriru
Nakoruru jumps off of Shikuru.Myu Shikite
Shikuru rushes forward with a headbutt that can travel across half the stage.
Kanto Shikite
Shikuru launches himself through the air at a diagonal angle.
Imel Shikite
Shikuru leaps into the air before diving toward the opponent.
Elelyu Kamui Rimuse
A one-time move whose appearance varies depending on the game. In some games, Nakoruru will begin this attack by leaping onto Mamahaha, using Kamui Mutsube, and delivering three Kamui Rimuses before unleashing an upward swing. Other games will have it consist solely of the four attacks with the cloak, and sometimes this move will end by having Nakoruru command Mamahaha to charge into the opponent.
Regardless of how it appears, this move will always end with her opponent being disarmed of their weapon.
Issen
Nakoruru lunges forward and slashes through her opponent. After appearing on the opposite side, she flicks her sword through the air as blood gushes from her enemy’s chest and they fall to the ground.
Irusuka-Ikashima-Wanpe-Chuie
Nakoruru charges her blade with ki and unleashes a barrage of slashes.
Apefuchi Kamui Risse
Nakoruru performs several rapid Kamui Risses as her cloak glows yellow.
Irusuka Yatoro Risse
Nakoruru glows with the energy of nature as Mamahaha dives toward the opponent. Upon hitting them, multiple energy-enhanced falcons will strike the opponent, with Mamahaha delivering the final hit as they explode.
Nubeki Kamui Shikite
Nakoruru leaps onto Shikuru, who rushes toward the opponent. Upon colliding, Nakoruru delivers a rising slash that takes both of them into the air before sending them back to the ground with a Kamui Rimuse.
Fatalities
Samurai Shodown IV:Nakoruru runs toward the opponent and kicks off of their body, causing them to cough up blood. She then rushes toward them and delivers a slash that knocks them off their feet.
Alternatively, she can leap through the air, taking the opponent with her by delivering a swift slash that cuts them in half at the waist.
Samurai Shodown V:
Nakoruru rushes toward her enemy, grabs them, and throws them into the air. She then leaps after them, slams them into the ground, and sits on their body as she stabs them through the chest.
Samurai Shodown Sen:
Nakoruru delivers a swift slash to her opponent’s head, arm, or chest, with each having a different effect.
- Targeting the head decapitates the enemy, causing their headless body to reach for the stump before collapsing.
- Targeting the arm will amputate it, causing the victim to clutch the stump and roll around for several seconds before going limp.
- Targeting the chest will cause blood to spray out as her enemy clutches their chest and falls backwards
RPG Attacks
The RPG Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits: Bushidō Retsuden gives Nakoruru a plethora of attacks to use during battle. Being the game’s white mage character, most of these involve holy magic, which is particularly effective against monsters and evil beings. These skills include:
- Spirit Dance: Smacks the enemy with her cloak to inflict elemental damage
- Divine Spirit Dance: Stronger version of the above that hits 4 times
- Guardian Woods: Heals one ally or herself. This has 3 levels, with the first restoring 80 HP, the second healing 200 HP, and the third healing the entire party for 200 HP
- Fire Hawk: Nakoruru sics a flaming Mamahaha on the enemy
- Spirit Lullaby: Nakoruru does a hawk impression that’s so terrible it causes physical damage and inflicts confusion
- Victory Blade: Nakoruru coats herself in ki and charges forward, slamming into multiple enemies
- Spirit Blade: Mamahaha picks Nakoruru up and they divebomb the enemy with a fiery diving slash
- Centered Spirit Blade: A stronger version of the above that moves in a straight line and hits multiple enemies
- Lightning Fang: Nakoruru mounts Shikuru as he leaps through the air, then jumps off and unleashes a ki-enhanced diving slash
- Flashing Fang: Shikuru charges forward with Nakoruru on his back before she jumps off, hitting multiple foes with a fiery, ki-infused slash
- Flying Fang: Nakoruru sics Shikuru on all onscreen enemies

Scaling
Talim
Talim scales to arguably the most important character in Soulcalibur’s story, which you may be surprised to find isn’t anyone like Kilik, or Siegfried, but instead the Conduit, the playable character from SC6’s Libra of Soul story mode. The Conduit can defeat basically any character in SC6, including Nightmare, Azwel, Kilik, Inferno, etc. The Conduit is directly linked to Astral Chaos itself, the dimension created by Soul Edge, and they can absorb and close Astral Fissures. An Astral Fissure is a rip in space and time caused by Soul Edge and Astral Chaos. Someone approaching an Astral Fissure will either kill them, or turn them into a corrupt Malfested. With the Conduit being powerful enough to survive this energy, and the energy itself recognizing their power, they can absorb the Astral Fissures and gain power from them. As of the end of the game, the Conduit has reached a point where they aren’t at risk of being absorbed by Astral Chaos, which apparently means matching its power.
In the post-game of Libra of Soul, Talim fights the Conduit in more of a spar than anything, but she performs a wind dance ritual afterwards wherein she outright knocks them out with her winds alone. This makes Talim scale to basically all the feats that’re on the table here, including those of Soul Edge, and the strongest players surrounding it, despite Talim largely having been ancillary to a few others around the weapon.
Playable Characters
- Siegfried’s clash with Nightmare destroyed the Lost Cathedral (27 kilotons) and shook the planet (7.14 teratons)
- Azwel’s experiments could destroy a country or two, but he sees that as boring
- Ivy kicked a bullet out of the air as soon as it fired (Mach 2.84)
- Yun-Seong can dodge lightning (Mach 738.15)
- Seong-Mina can swing her spear faster than lightning (2% c)
- Yoshimitsu can swing his sword in tandem with lightning (Mach 3095.29)
- Angol Fear can fly from the Angol homeworld at the center of the universe to Earth in less than a day (463,283,470 - 407.689 trillion c, See Before the Verdict) and can take over Angol Mois’ role in judging the Earth
- Angols are equipped with Lucifer Spears, whose strikes can reach Earth’s core from the surface and cause the planet to violently shake, eventually destroying it. They are also capable of splitting massive planets in half and imploding miniature replicas of Earth
Soul Edge
Even without scaling to the Conduit, Talim has regularly been shown overpowering Soul Edge in her story modes, either by banishing it or defeating beings like Abyss or Algol who combined its power with Soul Calibur. Her Tales of Souls also has her defeat Cassandra, whose endings consistently depict her destroying Soul Edge and even snapping Soul Calibur in half.
- The Evil Seed forming (which was caused by Soul Edge accepting Siegfried as its owner) creates a cloud of darkness forming high above the mountains that spreads over many kingdoms
- Zasalamel causes an eclipse when combining its power with Soul Calibur to become Abyss (18.24 yottatons)
- Soul Edge possesses the power of Astral Chaos, which can be used to create planets, including ones that resemble Jupiter (493.27 yottatons)
- An astrologer in Soulcalibur: Lost Swords who researches Soul Edge says two stars have fallen. While not explicitly said to be the doing of Soul Edge, it’s seemingly implied
- The core of Astral Chaos is called the “Star of Chaos,” further implying the scale and scope of the realm. It even looms over the Denever Castle stage, which takes place in Astral Chaos, as a sun would
- Soul Edge created a massive pillar of light that covered the world “in an instant” (4% c)
Nakoruru
Samurai Shodown Bosses
Nakoruru has defeated or killed them in her story modes.
- Amakusa cut a tenshu in half (0.010 tons and 94 m/s) and his energy (contained in a giant egg) was able to power the Sky Castle (8:21-8:47), which blew up part of a forest
- Shizuka Gozen created a pillar of energy that destroyed a forest (9.37 megatons and Mach 3.64)
- Mizuki Rashojin’s revival created a storm that spread across the world, and her defeat dispersed it (31:29-31:50) (4.8 teratons)
- Asura cleaved through part of a forest and created an explosion that destroyed a town (1.4 kilotons)
King of Fighters Characters
Nakoruru has made multiple guest appearances in King of Fighters, being featured heavily in its official manga adaptation, and shows up in the canonical crossover game SNK Heroines Tag Team Frenzy, whose art book references her KOFXIV story mode.
- Various cast members have either countered or survived blasts from the Zero Cannon, which was meant to destroy South Town (13.9 - 49.08 megatons). This includes:

- Bao absorbed it and fired it back into the satellite
- Terry was blasted by it and lived
- Choi and Chang survived a blast from it, but were knocked out

- Verse created a storm that destroyed a stadium (870.88 - 910 gigatons for the game’s version, 93.18 megatons - 1.88 gigatons for the manga version). Verse is made from the souls of various beings in KOF such as Orochi, so it should be comparable if not superior to Orochi’s servants that possess his power
- Orochi Shermie can create storms (32.96 megatons)
- Orochi Yashiro can create a massive amount of lava in a stage (35.26 gigatons)
- Geese casually murdered Verse
- Antonov survived a blast from Verse
- Various KOF characters are playable in Metal Slug Attack, where they can fight the Metzelei commanders, who can do the following
- Eis Monstrum can freeze Earth in the blink of an eye
- Geweih Metzelei can melt planets and wields highly concentrated energy that’s compared to a miniature sun (9.399 exatons of TNT per second, 38.8 zettatons per hour)
- Geweigh’s Grieving form can burn up stars.
- Cast members in gameplay are able to react to Orochi’s Blend/Rounding Reaper (24.26% c)
- Members of Team Ikari Warriors have made guest appearances in Metal Slug and been acknowledged in its manuals
- Clark and Ralf can damage the Invader King, who created a massive explosion upon dying (106 - 124.6 megatons for the explosion, 3.08 - 3.599 teratons with hemisphere scaling)
- Metal Slug’s soldiers can dodge lasers and EMPs (18.9% and 75% c)
Miscellaneous
Nakoruru is on par with or superior to the characters who perform these feats- Rera killed a bear in one strike

- Mikato, the protagonist of the Nakoruru adventure game, can dodge attacks from Shikuru while exhausted
- Haohmaru in Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture held back a charging bull and lifted it over his head (7:12-7:35) and cut down a nest of angry hornets without being stung (15:28-15:47)
- Earthquake’s minions can move FTE
Weaknesses
Talim
Talim is a fast, reactionary fighter who specializes in getting into very close range and staying there. Thus, one of her biggest weaknesses is the counterplay provided by fighters who out-range her, and can outspeed her. She also focuses heavily on evasion through her Wind Charmer to avoid vertical strikes, and Wind Sault to avoid horizontal ones. This leaves her at a disadvantage against attacks that have much more coverage, forcing her to rely on her subpar defenses.
In addition, Talim’s purification can heavily tax her if she tries to pace it out. This seems to be a matter of confidence, as she was fine after allowing the full corruption inside a boy to go through her at once, whereas gradually doing so was harmful to both him and Talim herself.
Nakoruru
Nakoruru suffers from having weak attacks and low defenses, often relying more on her speed, combos, and (in the RPG) healing spells to carry her or the party in battle. And since most of her moveset uses her sword, she’ll lose access to these attacks if she gets disarmed.
For non-gameplay related weaknesses, her pacifistic nature makes her extremely reluctant to kill others, which can leave her open to sneak attacks. Even in the Nakoruru ADV game where she kills a ton of people without batting an eye (20:17-21:20), the fallout leaves her so wracked with guilt that she somehow separated her battle instincts and willingness to kill into its own separate being. Unfortunately, this made her physically incapable of fighting, to the point where she couldn’t even kill in self defense, but it stopped being a problem when she accepted Rera as part of herself.
Before the Verdict
Nakoruru’s Sacrifice
During her ending in Samurai Shodown II, Nakoruru sacrifices herself to stop Mizuki Rashojin’s storm, and her soul ascends to take on a new position as the guardian of nature. That matches what we explained when going over her powers, so why are we bringing it up here?Well, her later appearances muddy this ending, and her death is even retconned by the official profiles on the Samurai Shodown website, which recap the series’ events. According to the SamSho 64 and SamSho 64 Warriors Rage profiles, Nakoruru was only believed to be dead and was actually just asleep, with the spirit of nature watching over her as she slumbered.
How Powerful is Ambrosia?
Arguably one of the most powerful beings in the series, Ambrosia is also one of the most mysterious and unknown entities in the series, with his physical appearances amounting to very few and the confrontations with him being more sparse. The only times he’s actually done anything throughout the entire franchise were during the Bushidō Retsuden RPG and the animated movie, and even those appearances have surprisingly little in terms of feats or statements. The movie has him overpower the heroes’ combined energy before getting killed by a rage boosted Haohmaru, and the RPG offers little more than flowery language like him “transforming the world into Hell” and being a physical incarnation of humanity’s fear, despair, death, and demons’ resentment and hatred. At best we could argue he’s above people like Amakusa and Mizuki Rashojin since they’re his servants, but Ambrosia lacks any feats of his own.
King of Fighters Scaling for Nakoruru
As explained in its section above, Nakoruru’s had several guest appearances in the King of Fighters series, whether it’s the games, manga, and even a company wide crossover like SNK Heroines. Additionally, Verse, the final boss of KOF XIV, is composed of the souls of numerous dead characters across not just King of Fighters, but SNK as a whole. This is even shown in its win quotes where it references Orochi, Igniz, Ash Crimson, Rugal Bernstein, Krizalid, Leona’s father Gaidel, and most relevant to this section: Mizuki Rashojin from the Samurai Shodown games.Given that Verse is made of various souls across time, this would imply that the Samurai Shodown games exist in the same universe as King of Fighters, with the manga adaptation even backing this up. This might sound weird since Nakoruru’s involvement in KOF is more of a recent development, but as explained in a previous blog, there’s plenty of evidence for SNK properties sharing the same universe. Just to list a few examples: Team Ikari Warriors and Team Psycho Soldier consist of characters from those series, Team Ikari Warriors are playable in a few Metal Slug games and get acknowledged in the manuals, and Fio from Metal Slug is playable in KOF: Maximum Impact.
And since we’re on the topic of company wide crossovers, let’s talk about SNK Heroines. The main villain of the game, Kukri, uses his sand to create a pocket dimension that drags the cast’s consciousness inside. This pocket dimension contains a statue that will merge it with reality upon gaining enough energy from the others’ fear and despair, and the entire dimension collapses when he’s defeated.
Does this mean Nakoruru can scale to universal levels of power from defeating Kukri in SNK Heroines?
Probably not. The dimension is only ever described as a world, which doesn’t automatically translate to “universe,” and it’s likely not a physical space. It was created from Kukri’s imagination and as shown in the game’s endings, it’s all a dream.
Past Timeline Scaling for Talim
Soulcalibur as a series has two timelines, the Original Timeline comprised of Soul Edge, Soulcalibur 1-5, Soulcalibur Legends, Soulcalibur Broken Destiny, and Soulcalibur: Unbreakable Soul, and the New Timeline that started (and thus far ended) with Soulcalibur 6. As such, one may think it odd that Talim is being given aspects of both timelines, and you’d be right! But the catch is, that the two timelines do scale to each other. An interesting event in Soulcalibur 6 is when Cassandra is attacked by her past timeline Malfested self. New Timeline Cassandra manages to defend herself and slay her attacker the first time she picked up a sword. Cassandra is hardly a high tier character, and like most others, can be scaled through the Conduit of SC6.It should be pointed out that the last we really know of Cassandra’s story is that she traverses through Astral Chaos alongside the Edge Master, one of the most knowledgeable and powerful characters in the series. Unfortunately our information on what exactly happens is as vapor in the wind, with Unbreakable Soul being essentially lost media. But this ties into her appearance in SC6, scaling Cassandra when she first picks up a sword to her old timeline self, Malfested and after an adventure with Edge Master. Malfested beings are even stronger than their untainted counterparts, so this sends a lot of the scaling sent through the original timeline, into the new one.
But Cassanda isn’t the only means of scaling between old and new timelines. Edge Master himself is also seemingly aware of the old timeline, as well as a new (old?) villain that started cropping up around the last content made for Soulcalibur 6, Iska Acht. She specifically references the events of Soulcalibur Legends, and seems to be an offshoot of Iska Farkas from the old timeline. This means that reasonably, whatever old timeline characters can do, the new timeline ones are likely even stronger, or at least even with their past timeline selves.
Sgt. Frog Scaling?????
Alright, here’s the funky one. Guest characters have been a thing throughout Soulcalibur since SC2, but clearly the likes of Spawn, Ezio, and Darth friggin’ Vader aren’t canon to the series. But what about BONUS characters? This is a unique concept from SC3 and 4, and the character in question here is Angol Fear. Despite the fact that she did originate in Soulcalibur, she’s actually a character from Sgt. Frog/Keroro Gunso, where she is a cosmic being who judges and destroys planets if they suck. One would think that this puts her into the same category as the aforementioned guest characters, but something’s a bit different here.Angol Fear was only in Soulcalibur 4 as a playable character, but the Relationship Chart released for Broken Destiny (translated version, Angol Fear’s near the bottom right-ish) still maintains Angol Fear as a canon character, despite the fact that all Guest Characters are not included on this chart. Bonus characters such as Shura, Ashlotte, and Scheherezade are still included though. Now, it's weird that Soulcalibur maintains the fact that Angol Fear is canon, but maybe it’s like Lloyd Irving in Legends, where he’s still canon to the story of Soulcalibur, but it’s a Soulcalibur version of the character.
Weirdly enough, that is very much not the case. In Sgt. Frog itself, after Angol Fear is introduced properly in the story, they slap us upside the head with this panel. Yep, that’s Angol Fear, in the Sgt. Frog manga, alongside Soul Edge and Soul Calibur, with it explicitly saying that the events of Soulcalibur were canon to Angol Fear’s story. So there we have both games acknowledging the crossover both ways, outside of the initial point of crossover. It’s hard to get more canon than that, as far as crossovers go. What this gives the characters is scaling to a speed feat of Angol Fear crossing the distance from the center of the universe to Earth, as well as their planet busting abilities. Scaling-wise, Yun-Seong impressed Angol Fear and she tried to abduct him as a specimen from Earth, so there’s certainly that.
Did Talim Purify Necrid?
A popular claim among the Soulcalibur fandom is that Talim purged the character Necrid of his corruption and Malfestation, which is the reason he only showed up in Soulcalibur II and nowhere else. Given how it’s been shown in the story modes that she can cure others of similar infections, this would have some basis. But despite searching far and wide, we couldn’t find any source that backed this claim. We checked through arcade modes, story modes, official guides, and art books, and there wasn’t anything that even remotely implied Talim cured Necrid, or that he was cured at all.Even Necrid’s ending doesn’t give us any evidence. We’re shown that he sacrifices himself to take Soul Edge into Astral Chaos, and that’s it. The only other time he’s been acknowledged in canon was an offhand mention in an art book that went over the original timeline. And not only did that reference place his existence years before the series, the brief description we’re given is an exact copy of his in-game ending.
Verdict
Stats
When it comes to the stat trinity, there’s no comparison. With Samurai Shodown stats alone, Nakoruru defeating the series’ bosses would let her scale to feats like Asura creating an explosion that destroyed a town and Shizuka Gozen creating a pillar of energy that destroyed a forest, which would require outputs of 1.4 kilotons and 9.37 megatons of TNT, respectively. The latter feat would also get her speeds of Mach 3. And from killing Mizuki Rashojin, she would scale to the Mizuki’s feat of creating a storm across the world, letting her reach nearly 5 teratons. How does this compare to Talim? It’s not even close.
First off, that country level feat from Mizuki Rashojin that Talim scales to? Destroying a country is considered boring in the Soulcalibur universe. And this is something from a character Talim would be well above.
In her own story mode, she defeated Zasalamel when he had the power of both Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, which he used to cause an eclipse right before their fight. This casual feat is worth 18 yottatons, over 3 trillion times stronger than Nakoruru’s best scaling in SamSho!
And it gets worse! Thanks to knocking out a post endgame Conduit with her winds by accident, she should reasonably scale to the Conduit, a being directly linked to the dimension of Astral Chaos, who can match and absorb its energies to become stronger, and had previously beaten top tiers like Nightmare, Azwel, and Inferno! So what would that give her?
Well, Nightmare could shake the planet while fighting Siegfried, which comes out to 7 teratons. The energy of Astral Chaos is able to create planets as large as Jupiter, which would require an energy of 493 yottatons. And that’s without getting into the possible star level arguments, like Astral Chaos’ core, “the Star of Chaos,” looming over Denever Castle like a sun.
Speed isn’t much better considering Soulcalibur has multiple lightning timing feats, calculated anywhere from Massively Hypersonic to even Sub-Relativistic speeds.
What about Nakoruru’s appearances in King of Fighters? Wouldn’t that and the shared SNK universe give her some comparable scaling?
Fortunately, there are speed feats in KOF and Metal Slug that would get some percentage of the speed of light. These would make Nakoruru even faster than Soul Edge covering the world in light “in an instant,” which only gets 4% the speed of light.
And with the pre-existing connections between KOF and Metal Slug, you could potentially give Nakoruru a scaling chain to the Metzelei commanders from Metal Slug Attack. These are bosses stated to freeze Earth in the blink of an eye, melt planets, and even burn up stars! With that in mind, the gap in Attack Potency would be way lower, and the last statement could potentially put her on par with Talim’s own star level arguments.
…But if we’re taking shared universes into account, then we’d need to give Talim scaling to the Angols from Sgt. Frog. Since Angol Fear is acknowledged as canon to both series, with Sgt. Frog flat-out showing her alongside Soul Calibur and Soul Edge, that means we could scale Talim to feats from that series. This would include splitting massive planets in half, imploding miniature replicas of Earth, and Angol Fear flying from the center of the universe to Earth in less than a day, which would be over 463 million times the speed of light at minimum. So even if we give them comparable AP, not only would Talim have more consistency, she would blitz horrendously!
Tertiaries
This one is rather easy to figure out. Talim, being way younger, has only a decade of experience wielding her powers and weapons, and her combat experience amounts to even less. Meanwhile Nakoruru was not only considered the greatest warrior in her tribe at 17, she’s also got a massive body count. And while her ascension into becoming a spirit means she became less active in combat, the fact that she can continue fighting even into the modern day means she’d have plenty of experience over Talim.Arsenal
In terms of arsenal, one may look at the list of Talim’s various Tonfa, determining that she takes the advantage here, but even with as many blades as she has, they all still follow her core moveset the same way. Even with their ability to buff her stats and do chip damage, they don’t give her much in terms of variety. In contrast, Nakoruru has way more at her disposal, mainly thanks to the Bushidou Retsuden RPG! Her items provide plenty of ways for her to heal herself, buff her attacks with the elements, boost her stats, or nerf Talim’s. The armors and accessories only further add to her defenses and stat/elemental buffs. On top of all that, several of the items inflict some pretty nasty status effects, albeit very little that Talim didn’t resist.
Abilities
This comes down to a case of quality vs quantity. Nakoruru easily takes the latter with her intangible spirit physiology, ability to create avatars, interact with intangible beings, amp herself with the Shrine Maiden’s Song, summon ghosts for backup, and time travel. Unfortunately, most of these powers are either hard countered by Talim or have never been used in combat.Talim’s aerokinesis would make quick work of Mamahaha and Shikuru, and with how strong it is, not even Nakoruru’s bird army from the manga would be much help.
Even the intangible options aren’t safe. Nakoruru’s existence as a spirit and ghostly summons are hard countered by Talim’s own ability to perceive and harm spirits. And considering she could banish beings as powerful as Soul Edge, there’s nothing stopping her from doing the same here.
The power boost from the Shrine Maiden’s Song would be useful in lessening the power gap… except the amp only applies to slaying evil, which wouldn’t affect Talim since she’s pure-hearted.
You’d think time travel would be Nakoruru’s ace in the hole if nothing else, but it has one major problem: Nakoruru has never used it during combat. She only relies on it to escape disasters or find partners that can help stop them. The idea of using it during a fight hasn’t even been brought up in any of her appearances!
Conclusion
Regardless of what arguments you make for both sides, this is a clear cut victory for Talim. Nakoruru’s plentiful arsenal would give Talim a challenge, but the wind priestess completely decimates Nakoruru in stats and has counters to every one of her powers, meaning it would only be a matter of time before Nakoruru ends up gone with the wind. This fight may have been a breeze for Talim, but Nakoruru was blown away.
The winner is Talim.
Summary
